After bouncing around the 100 cms mark for the past three days, the Bow River at Calgary dropped slowly over the day to 84 cms. That's still a higher flow rate than the long term average for late September.

It was a chilly 5.0 °C first thing this morning. Some of the vehicles we shuttled today had their heaters turned on. However, it eventually got up to 14°C. Tomorrow's forecast high is 21°C!

It was great to be able to move fishing rigs in and out of McKinnon Flats today. We also had pickups at all of the other boat launches, including Glenmore, 22X, Police and Legacy.

The fishing raft in the photo was drifting to Johnson's Island/Carseland.

McKinnon Flats Open, repairs complete

ESRD writes: "Repairs to the access road into McKinnon Flats are now complete and the launch site has been reopened. Public access and use is welcomed.

The repairs enhance the resiliency of the road to withstand weather events and improve access for anglers, outfitters and the public alike. These repairs include reshaping the existing road, culvert installation, and placement of gravel.

We were pleased to be able to provide the very first shuttle down to Mac this afternoon on the improved road. It was an unexpected reverse shuttle for a couple of visiting fly fishing drift boaters from south of the 49th.

The gravel trucks began arriving this morning, along with the grader.

There were three trucks, with a fourth expected sometime later in the day. We understand that hauling gravel would continue on Friday.

They are using 'belly dump' trucks as opposed to 'end dump' trucks. That's what creates the fairly neat row of gravel down the centre of the road.

We were told that these large trucks were actually having a bit of a challenge coming back up the very steep road, on the gravel that they had just laid down.

We were surprised to learn that they are hauling the gravel in from Beiseker. So the grader operator has a bit of a wait between the trips.

There was also a small crew applying rip rap to the ends of the culverts that were out of our view.

The first round of gravel had been laid out just about to the end of the section of road that can be seen in this photo.

The grader had done some work up the the first corner that had the culvert installed yesterday.

The warm air bubble we've been in took us up to 25°C today. These two fly fishers were going to take full advantage, with a Thursday morning launch under a mostly blue sky... and no wind!

McKinnon Flats road work Day 3

The third culvert was installed today. The second culvert that was installed yesterday needed to be 'tweeked'.

A padfoot packer was doing its thing - packing the road. This type of packer is intended to leave the surface somewhat rough, so that it will have a better chance of holding on to the gravel on this very steep road.

They plan to begin hauling in the gravel tomorrow.

All hands were on deck for whatever 'tweeking' was required on the second culvert, which was installed yesterday.

The D6 Cat was carving out a drainage ditch along the road.

Two culverts were being installed today, with a third one going in tomorrow.

The bobcat was repairing the section of the road where the first culvert had been installed.

The excavator was digging a trench for the second culvert.

McKinnon Flats Closed... What now?

With McKinnon Flats being closed for the next few days, several shuttle clients floated from Policeman's Flats to Legacy Island today. At 38 kms, that's longer than our regular 'day trips'.

However, when you consider that folks float Fish Creek to McKinnon all the time, which is 32 km, the Police to Legacy trip is only an extra 6 kms.

With the 22X/Fish Creek Park boat launch now open, other options for float trips this week include Glenmore to 22X/Fish Creek Park, 22X/Fish Creek Park to Policeman's Flats and Glenmore to Policeman's Flats.

The Highwood confluence is near the bottom of this map. McKinnon Flats is a bit further up. And Legacy Island is at the top.

This map can be purchased from Paddle Alberta Society. http://www.paddlealberta.org/. It's also available at Mountain Equipment Co-Op. It's called the "Middle Bow River" and covers from the Ghost Dam to Carseland. The cartographer was Clayton Roth, a local Calgarian.

"The upcoming week looks promising for Bow river enthusiasts. The long-range forecast shows a return to seasonal temperatures or hotter. Hoppers survived last week’s untimely snow as did caddis and BWOs.

Guides returned to the oars on Saturday, September 13 after several days’ hiatus due to the snow. They were pleased to hear hoppers on the banks and see caddis and blue-winged olives. River temperatures had dropped because of cooler temperatures, snow, and the start of the snow melt but fish still ate."
