Co-op ups its takeout game (Calgary)

Co-op ups its takeout game
By John Gilchrist, For the Calgary Herald April 19, 2013
Large Le Creuset braising pots (in the bright cherry colour) are set out on hot pads to keep their contents warm. They’re filled with braised short ribs, slabs of thick and shiny meat loaf, hunter chicken in a creamy sauce, mashed potatoes and more. A chef opens an oven door and the rich scent of applewood-smoked bacon issues forth. A second chef pulls long, hand-stretched pizzas from a different oven and loads them onto stylish maple cutting boards. Along one side, an international array of salads provides a tempting display, while at another station, a curry bar offers butter chicken, tikka masala and chicken vindaloo. Meanwhile, Simple Simon soups steam in large pots and fresh-boiled and baked bagels wait, ready to be made into sandwiches. Across the room, a huge coffee roaster dumps a batch of hot Colombian beans into its cooling bin, the aroma of roasted beans doing battle with the smoked meats.
What is this? A new restaurant or deli? A funky joint on 17th Avenue perhaps?
Nope — it’s Fresh To Go, a new dine-in and meals-to-go concept from Calgary Co-op.

Grass fire along the Bow River

On
Friday afternoon, around 4:00 pm, we had just turned west off the
McKinnon road, onto 22X, when we noticed a significant amount of smoke
to the west.
We recognized the smoke as a grass fire, and it
looked like it was on the eastern outskirts of Calgary. However, the
closer we got, the more we realized it was in the city.
This
dramatic photo of two helicopters with water buckets, scooping from the
Bow River, is courtesy Dan Jackson, a Calgary fly fisher.

TUC Bow River Chapter 'Tackle Swap' 2013

The 20th annual 'Tackle Swap' was a huge success. Volunteer Event Coordinator Craig R. said that this was the highest number of tables purchased by sellers since switching to the 'garage sale' format over ten years ago.
In fact, while he said he might have been able to squeeze in another table, for all intents and purposes, it was a sell out!
He also stated that the number of buyers may have been at an all time high. Often times, come 11:30 am, most buyers have come and gone. Not so this year.

Scientists to monitor fish spawning at Harvie Passage
Electrofishing uses direct current to temporarily stun fish
CBC News, Apr 26, 2013
Scientists were on the Bow River Friday to catch and tag fish as part of an effort to monitor spawning activities around Harvie Passage.
The area,
downstream from the Calgary Zoo, was redesigned between 2009 and 2012 to make
the passage less dangerous.
Now,
researchers are tagging and monitoring fish to make sure the changes won't
impact their spawning activities in the Bow River.

Can't complain too much. Our high of 17°C was above the long term average! What a nice change from recent days/weeks/months.
Skies were mostly cloudy. The only downside was a bit of wind avg 19,
max 44, although that didn't seem to be bothering the drifters in this
photo.

Another 'spring' day on the Bow. Drifters who got an early start encountered weather that was a bit different than those who put on in the afternoon.
Mostly cloudy in the am, we hit our daytime high of 8°C by 2:00 pm.
By 3:00 pm, it had dropped to 2 °C, and we had a 'light snow' storm move through. By 4:00 pm, it was back up to 7°C.
Just after 4:00 pm, we had a rain shower and a bit of hail!

Canada quietly pulls out of UN anti-droughts convention
A few weeks ago, Canada announced that it was withdrawing its support of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. In doing so, we become the only country in the world that is not part of this agreement. Here is a column on that subject that appeared in the Calgary Herald.
The grim human toll of desertification
By Craig & Marc Kielburger, Calgary Herald April 8, 2013
Nora Busienei closed her eyes and smiled as she remembered years past when her small farmhouse burst at the seams with sacks of maize, beans, millet and pumpkins.
"I would stare at our harvest. I was so happy, so confident in my children's future," she said, before her smile faded. "That feels like another world now."
Today, her mud hut in Pimbiniet, Kenya, is full of nothing but choking smoke from the cooking fire.
