It's a beautiful day for a mental health checkup

by Karin Klassen, Calgary Herald, Oct 05, 2015

Today, on this most beautiful Alberta fall day, someone will go home to find the person they most love in this world, dead of something self-inflicted.

This devastating scene will play out close to 500 times this year in this province alone, maybe more with the bad economy. That’s the highest suicide rate in the country.

Anyone can join this club, and they do — across genders, cultures and ages — but the victim will probably be male, because they’re almost four times as likely to call it a day on their life, and with probably just 40 to 60 years spent on this Earth. Teenagers are also tragically welcome; it’s the most likely way they’ll leave their families behind to keep their rooms just as they were left, the day they “left.” In obituary terms, this is known as “died suddenly.”

As it turns out, people who feel desperate, do desperate things.

Today is National Depression Screening Day, and the Calgary Counselling Centre has provided an online link for you to take a free, anonymous screening test for this mental health issue that more than half a million people are treated for in Alberta every year.

""When the health system fails to treat mental illness, the justice system punishes the symptoms". Canadians should be pressing the parties to take a leadership position on the healthcare file and one aspect of that file that needs the most attention is mental illness." - Mood Disorders Society of Canada

From soldier to champion for mental health

Personal contact is key, he says

Charlie Fidelman, Calgary Herald/Postmedia News/Montreal Gazette, October 30, 2014

Stéphane Grenier stepped off a Hercules aircraft under a blast of gunfire with the Canadian peacekeeping forces during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. That, recalled the retired lieutenant-colonel, “was the beginning of the rest of my life.”

He became addicted to the adrenalin of dangerous war zones and peace missions — Afghanistan, Cambodia, Kuwait and Haiti to name a few — anything was better than home. Civilians, he felt, couldn’t relate to soldiers returning from war-torn areas with a combination of grief, stress, trauma and depression.

With many people suffering in silence due to fear of rejection and judgment, addressing mental health issues at work is vital for Canadian companies. No workplace is immune from the risk of mental health problems, regardless of size or sector. The workplace is a strong contributor to mental wellbeing, giving people the opportunity to achieve their potential and feel productive. It can also be a stressful environment that may contribute to increased mental health issues and illness.

Chamber puts mental health in spotlight

"Mental illness and depression is projected to be the No. 1 ailment affecting the global population by the year 2020. If you look at it from a business perspective, it is the No. 1 cost of prescription drugs for employers, it is the No. 1 cause of absenteeism and sick days," says chamber of commerce president Adam Legge.

"Break From Reality" by Morgan Paul - book launching party/pop-up art showcase

"Break From Reality" by Morgan Paul - book launching party/pop-up art showcase

4-6pm. Studio C, 502, 237 - 8 Ave SE, September 5, 2014

Description of “Break from Reality”

"Break from Reality, is an autobiography written by Morgan M. Paul. The book consists of a number of short stories in order from the time he moved out of his parents in 2009 to January 1st 2014.

He describes every serious traumatic event leading up to his hospitalization with a mental illness in 2010 and both negative and positive accounts afterwards. The book was intended as a form of coping and understanding parts of his life that made the deepest impression on him, later realizing that the stories were so bizarre and dangerous that perhaps people would find it to be a very griping dramatic novel.

The book gives insight to people who may have lead more productive and healthier lives, that not everybody has the option or chooses a better, safer path in life. As some stories are very personal and have serious dark undertones of depression and physical danger, you won’t be able to read this book in a place where you can’t laugh out loud.

Morgan M. Paul’s book is somewhat short with only sixty pages before the conclusion but you’ll find each chapter to be as great as the last and will make you want to learn more of his rock n’ roll life style and careless young adulthood.

Be warned, anyone who is naturally squeamish or easily offended, this book might not be for you. Many of the early chapters describe prolonged use of street drugs such as L.S.D, Ecsatcy and Cocaine. chapters filled with physical violence.

Morgan’s careless life style made for one heck of a read."

"I hope ... that we can [also] remember him as one who struggled daily with mental illness. I hope we remember that even though he lost his battle, no one else has to. There is help. There is no shame in saying, 'I have a mental illness, and I need help'. It could be those very words that save someone's life. It could be those very words that save your life."
