Snow Pack - May 31 2013

Click directly on graphs for larger images

One week ago today, we were in the third day of a fairly significant three day rainfall event. We were told that the cold rain we experienced was falling as snow in the high country. The snow pillow graphs certainly confirm that.

In more than one instance, that snowfall resulted in raising the level of the snow pack back to where it was prior to the snow melt that began in early May.

Ottawa to fund $5M study of effects of climate change on western Canadian rivers

John Pomeroy, Canada research chair in water resources and climate change, said research into Western Canada’s river systems is especially important as Alberta aims to prove it is developing the oilsands responsibly. “It makes sense for Canada to be investing in this,” he said. Ottawa to fund $5M study of effects of climate change on western Canadian rivers

By Colette Derworiz, Calgary Herald May 24, 2013

From the Rockies to the Prairies and the Arctic to the United States border, a $5 million investment will allow scientists to study Western Canada’s major river systems and how they are affected by climate change.

John Pomeroy, a professor at the U of S who conducts research out of the Marmot Creek Research Basin in Kananaskis Country, said the federal funding will have a tremendous impact across the Prairies.

“It provides some good core funding for the next five years for myself and a number of other people who are working in the Rockies, from Kananaskis right up into the icefields,” he said. “We’ll be looking at the impact of snowpack and changing glaciers and changing forest cover — which are all shifting in response to the changing climate — on our water supply.”

Today's High 8 °C , rain, wind avg 16 max 37, Bow River at Calgary flow 235 cms at 3:00 pm.

The figure above is the Bow River below Carseland. Interesting to see that it increased from 205 cms at 5:00 pm yesterday to 429 cms today at 5:00 pm!

The flow rate at Calgary experienced only a marginal increase. That means lots of water is coming into the Bow River below the Calgary station, from Elbow River, Nose Creek, Fish Creek, Pine Creek and Highwood River.

Fortunately, the rain is supposed to be easing off by tomorrow morning (Saturday).

China's Water Woes

The Current/CBC May 10 2013

China's thirsty in its search for reliable aqua pura. Its farms and factories demand more, so Beijing seeks more control over its lakes and streams.

And that's bringing it into conflict with neighbouring countries that rely on waters that flow through China.

Ray Manzarek (1939 - 2013) 'Doors' Co-Founder Was 74

Ray Manzarek (1939 - 2013)

Ray Manzarek Dead: 'Doors' Co-Founder Was 74

“While [Jim] Morrison, with his proto-celebrity lifestyle and tragic end, forever will remain the face of The Doors, you could argue Manzarek's keyboard work was every bit as important and helped balance some of the singer's more over-the-top moments.

His creepy organ line on "Light My Fire" adds a weirdo menace to what outwardly is a rock 'n' roll pick-up song. And his after-hours, lounge style on "Riders On the Storm" transforms that song into an epic unlike anything else the band ever did.”

Today along the Bow River - May 2013

This young man was doing a credible job of casting with his fly rod as the boats drifted by.
All photos, Copyright Bow River Shuttles All rights reserved 2013

A beautiful day, with more than 20 drift boats floating all reaches of the 'Blue Ribbon' section of the Bow River.

Although the clouds were around all day, there was lots of sunshine to be had.

We got a lot of photos today (as we do most days) and it was hard to narrow the collection down to three. As it was Saturday, we saw lots of families, both floating and fishing along the banks. In the end, we chose two photos with kids, with a fairly solid drift boat shot in the middle. Hope you enjoy them.

This boy was fun to watch for a few minutes. In turn, he was watching his father's every move.

Today's High 20 °C , mostly cloudy with light rain showers late afternoon, wind avg 10 max 33, Bow River at Calgary flow 130 cms.
