It was mostly sunny this morning when these folks were setting up for their float.

 Today's High 17 °C , Partly cloudy AM, overcast PM, wind avg 8 max 24, Bow River at Calgary flow 150 cms at 6:00 pm.

We know who mama is.:-) 

The Highwood River is gradually rising again. Flow 106 cms at 6:00 pm. The Bow at Mac was medium brown colour on river right. Time for high water tactics: http://midcurrent.com/experts/fishing-high-water-for-trout/

Snow Pack - May 31 2013

One week ago today, we were in the third day of a fairly significant three day rainfall event. We were told that the cold rain we experienced was falling as snow in the high country. The snow pillow graphs certainly confirm that.

In more than one instance, that snowfall resulted in raising the level of the snow pack back to where it was prior to the snow melt that began in early May.

McKinnon Flats today - last week's higher water uprooted a few trees, which ended up on the gravel bar.

Today's High 8 °C , rain, wind avg 16 max 37, Bow River at Calgary flow 235 cms at 3:00 pm.

The figure above is the Bow River below Carseland. Interesting to see that it increased from 205 cms at 5:00 pm yesterday to 429 cms today at 5:00 pm!

The flow rate at Calgary experienced only a marginal increase. That means lots of water is coming into the Bow River below the Calgary station, from Elbow River, Nose Creek, Fish Creek, Pine Creek and Highwood River.

Fortunately, the rain is supposed to be easing off by tomorrow morning (Saturday).

Today's High 9 °C , light rain to rain, wind avg 15 max 37, Bow River at Calgary flow 190 cms at 6:00 pm.

"There is the potential for up to 40 mm of rain in Calgary Friday. Light rain will continue to fall on Saturday, then drier weather can be expected Sunday. In addition, more snow can be expected Friday night and early Saturday in the foothills." - David Spence, CTV Calgary

The spring runoff on the Bow River has begun at Lake Louise and Banff. In fact, it appears from the graphs that we are about 2 weeks ahead of the long term averages. We are already at levels that we would not normally see until around June 01. 

They have not yet begun opening the dams above Calgary, and as a result, the flow rate at Calgary is still very low, with a small upward trend beginning to show. However, that flow rate could increase at any time, and very quickly.
