Hey ladies – it’s almost time for the best fly fishing party of the year. The River's Edge Fly Shop is hosting the 7th Annual Chica de Mayo! 

This ever-growing and popular ladies event will be held at The Gallatin Gateway Inn this year. So, leave the guys at the river and come out for a fun evening designed just for you! 

This year, we are excited to have Millie Paini of the TroutHunter Fishing Lodge join us and share her perspectives on fly fishing. New this year, we are having a “Pre-Event” Casting Clinic with Diana Rudolph for those who are interested in learning more about fly casting. The “Pre-Event” Casting Clinic will start at 5:30 PM sharp and is free to ladies who want to attend. 

Casting for Recovery Staff and The Row-for-a-Cure pink drift boat will be on-hand and there will be opportunities to support some great causes. Did we mention there will be fantastic prizes, food and drink, and Limited Edition Chica de Mayo t-shirts for sale? Oh, and The Sweet Groovalicious Funk Machine will round out the evening with some live funk music?

Attention women who fish: A new organization in Canada wants to hear your story and see your photos. Great Canadian Female Anglers is a grassroots group made up of volunteers, which was recently formed to promote fishing among women. “I came up with the idea of the GCFA during my most recent pregnancy and mat leave,” says Heather Reid, the group’s founder and director (pictured at above). “I wanted to reach out to other women who love fishing as much as I do, using social media as my tool.”

A couple years ago, we ran a series called “Trout Bum of the Week,” in which we highlighted some of the guys living the good life. . .of a sort. (See the bottom of this post for a link to the previous installments.) This is our second round of profiles. Most of the subjects are guides who have turned their passion into a vocation, spending their time in an outdoor “office” that may include a drift boat, gorgeous mountain scenery, and crystal clear water. Others do have day jobs but manage to spend every other available minute on the water with a fly rod in hand. Whether you aspire to one lifestyle or the other, it’s illuminating to explore the different paths these men and women have taken on their way to achieving “trout bum” status.

The Broads with Rods flyfishing club is recruiting 10 new members after a successful first year of the women-only flyfishing club. 

Instructor Mharie Sinclaire said she started the club last year after she was approached by several women in Merritt who wanted to learn the sport.

Who says the sport fly fishing is shrinking?

Ok, maybe as a whole it is, but the last couple of years, women fly fishers have been on a steady rise, and just about everyone seems to be taking notice of the phenomenon. The past eleven years, I spent very little time on the water guiding female anglers. On occasion, I’d book a husband and wife trip, but the brunt of my guiding in the sport was male dominated. The past year and a half though, I’ve noticed a substantial shift in my client demographics, with women increasingly making up more of the pie. I’m guiding many more married couples and I’m even booking quite a few trips from solo female’s, who are taking the initiative to go out and learn how to fly fish on their own. Noticing this change in my day to day guide business, I couldn’t help to think, this could be our golden ticket to turning around the shrinking industry, and finally have a good chance at putting fly fishing back in the green (growing sport).
