Anglers asked to collect samples for U of C to test for 'rock snot'

Calling all anglers. Must be willing to collect ‘rock snot’ and fill out some details online.

Trout Unlimited and the University of Calgary want people who are out fishing, hiking or exploring along rivers in Alberta to sample rocks for Didymospehnia geminata, commonly known as Didymo and nicknamed rock snot for its mucous-like stickiness. 

It’s a slimy, green aquatic algae that grows along the stream bottom.

“We’re asking anglers to collect samples for us,” said Lee Jackson, a professor in the department of biological sciences in the Faculty of Science at the U of C. “We are using it as a means to sample locations that we haven’t sampled before.

Trout Unlimited Canada - Bow River Chapter "Tackle Swap" - A Look Back

The 2015 "Tackle Swap" was the biggest year yet in terms of bookings, with 28 tables sold (sellout is 30) plus 5 used boats. There was also a consensus that a record turnout of people showed up to buy goods.

Thanks to George Samaha for organizing and coordinating this event, along with a lot of help from Stephen Fairley. Longtime TUC volunteers Craig Robillard and Craig Cooper also contributed to the success of this year's event. 

George Samaha writes: "It warms my heart to see a record crowd of participants and buyers at the sale to raise money for Trout Unlimited as it is something I hold dear to my heart. These funds will be used to sustain our local fishery and sustain it for our next generation. I look forward to seeing everyone next year."

TUC "The Big One" - A Look Back

The Trout Unlimited Canada 31st Annual National Conservation Dinner (Calgary) was another success story. Despite the current state of our economy, related to the fall in oil and gas prices, supporters of cold water conservation and the trout that live there stepped up to the plate once again.

Although the final numbers are not yet in, Director of Special Events Don Pike reports that the total funds raised may approach the $700,000 mark.

Dozens of volunteers, along with TUC staff, pitch in to make this happen.

 A "Fly Fishing Movie Madness" package was donated by Michelle Magotiaux/Bow River Shuttles. It included the four movies from Confluence Films - Drift, Rise, Connect and Waypoints.

The new tablet based Silent Auction bid system proved to be a hit. It allowed guests to bid on items right from their tables.

A New Lease on Life for TUC-Bow River Chapter

A great turnout for the Trout Unlimited Canada - Bow River Chapter AGM - the best ever by most accounts - has resulted in a new lease on life for the Chapter.

Seven new Directors were elected to the Board, in addition to current President Garth Sobey staying on to help with the transition.

Big props go out to Garth, as well as to outgoing Directors Craig Cooper and Craig Robbillard, for keeping the Chapter alive over the past dozen or more years!

Trout Unlimited Canada writes: "The 2014 Fish Rescue was a great success, thanks to our many amazing volunteers who came out to help Trout Unlimited Canada and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development. 

This year 50,785 fish were rescued from six irrigation canals diverting water from the Bow, Oldman, Belly, Highwood, and Waterton river systems.

TUC Tackle Swap/BRS Used Drift Boat Sale - A Look Back

These two events in early April went very well. 

We had four drift boats, a jon boat and a pontoon boat on display outside. 

 Inside, long time TUC-Bow River Chapter volunteers felt that this year's tackle swap was on of the best they'd ever seen. A total of 24 tables were booked by sellers, which is pretty much the max for that room. And the sellers brought LOTS of stuff! On the buyers side, a very large number showed up, and they purchased a LOT of stuff. 

In past years, the crowds tended to begin thinning out shortly after 11 am. Not this year. It continued to be fairly busy, almost to the end at noon. 

 Kudos to TUC-Bow River Chapter volunteer George Samaha. This was his first year organizing this event. Volunteer Steve Fairley assisted. 

George wrote: "Craig Robillard was there for a great hand off and help where needed."

TUC The Big One - Today's the Day

More than a dozen volunteers were involved earlier today with the set-up for the Bucket Draws, Silent Auction and Live Auction for Trout Unlimited Canada's major fundraising event.

More volunteers came in throughout the day to take care of the myriad of tasks that needed to be looked after, both prior to the 5 pm start time, as well as throughout the evening.
