Keep’n the Dean dilemma current

Keep’n the Dean dilemma current. Management shortfalls and the official response.

Area8Watch, November 21, 2013

I received an email the other day about keeping the Dean issue current…. even in depths of winter. I couldn’t agree more. Next year, another cycle of overfishing will polarize area 8 throughout the summer and the responsibility lies with the angling community to be prepared before it starts.

Dry dam in provincial flood mitigation plan ‘doesn’t cut it’

Kevin Van Tighem, biologist and former superintendent of Banff National Park, says a proposed dry dam upstream of the Elbow river won’t do much to help with future flooding, and could be harmful to the natural environment.

Dry dam in provincial flood mitigation plan ‘doesn’t cut it’

Former Banff Park boss raises environmental concerns

By Colette Derworiz, Calgary Herald November 25, 2013

The former superintendent of Banff National Park says the Redford government has tunnel vision with some of its flood mitigation projects, particularly plans to construct a dry dam upstream of Calgary’s Elbow River.

Scientists pan Alberta’s massive dam plan for Elbow River

Trout Unlimited Canada writes: "Metro News asked our thoughts about a proposed dam on the upper Elbow River; this plan was put forward by the province's Flood Recovery Task Force as way to protect Calgary from future floods."

Scientists pan Alberta’s massive dam plan for Elbow River

By Robson Fletcher, Metro News, Tues Nov 26, 2013

Scientists, environmentalists, and the former superintendent of Banff National Park are raising serious concerns about the Alberta government’s plan to build a dam in Kananaskis capable of holding more than twice as much water as the Glenmore Reservoir.

Variously describing the plan as “disheartening,” “gut-wrenching,” and “pretty crazy,” Brian Meagher, a provincial biologist with Trout Unlimited Canada, said the government is overselling the protection the proposed dry dam on the Elbow River would offer Calgary from future flooding, and downplaying its environmental impact.

The Antidote to Black Friday?

The Antidote to Black Friday?

Hatch Magazine, by Chad Shmukler, Nov 25, 2013

Even if you're like me and are heavily critical of the role consumerism plays in modern, especially American, society, it's hard not to get caught up in the holiday shopping frenzy that kicks off each year with Black Friday. Beginning in early November, we're absolutely bombarded with advertisements which detail supposedly too-good-to-be-true deals on everything from clothing to toys to electronics. There's only one problem: we hardly need any of it.

You May Be Killing Steelhead And Not Even Know It

Gink & Gasoline, November 18, 2013 / by Louis Cahill

Steelheaders are generally pretty serious about catch-and-release, but it’s likely that many are mortally wounding fish without ever knowing it.

There are few species of fish as vulnerable as wild steelhead. These fish are beset on all sides by threats both natural and man-made. With their numbers dwindling, it’s safe to say, every steelhead counts. It’s vital that those of us who fish for them practice the best catch-and-release practices.

Canada gutting its international reputation along with its environmental laws

West Coast Environmental Law writes: "Protection of fish and fish habitat are not the only things at risk because of recent changes to the Fisheries Act. In a recent op-ed in the Hill Times, West Coast Environmental Law staff lawyer Anna Johnston argues that Canada is gutting its international reputation by gutting its environmental laws."

WAYPOINTS (The City of Calgary) What folks are saying...

WAYPOINTS (The City of Calgary) What folks are saying...

I’m sure that everyone who got to enjoy WAYPOINTS on the Big Screen will remember the experience for some time to come.

Here are a few comments we received from WAYPOINTS (Calgary) fans:

“The locations were fantastic……lots of fun to dream about.” – John E.

“Like all Confluence movies… some of the best made.” - Don P.

“One of the very best - really enjoyed it....” – Gerry T.

“The stuff of dreams.” - Ron S.

There have also been a couple of reviews written recently.

- Angler’s Tonic

“I’m not going to go further with this. I want you to see this premiere tomorrow without knowing all that’s going to happen. I want you to be stunned and amazed and I think you will be. My only warning: if you’re the jealous type, you’ll feel a little pain watching all these people who aren’t you, having all the fun.”

Read review here: http://bit.ly/17SfxqF

- Kirk Deeter, Fly Talk, Field & Stream

“But as a writer, I can't help but reserve a deeper level of appreciation for quality words that capture the essence of not only the action, but also the culture. I like [fly fishing films] wrapped in themes, and I like them to have substance. Most of all I like them to inspire. Which is exactly why ‘Waypoints’ impressed me deeply.”

Changes to Fisheries Legislation Have Removed Habitat Protection for Most Fish Species in Canada

John Post, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Calgary, says the federal government’s changes to the fisheries legislation have eviscerated the ability to protect habitat for many of the country’s fish species.

Trout Unlimited Canada writes: "John Post and Jeff Hutchings are two of Canada's highly respected fisheries scientists. The changes to fisheries legislation in Canada has increased the need for the work that Trout Unlimited Canada does and the need for your support. Time for Alberta to come clean about environmental accidents

By Paula Simons, Edmonton Journal November 14, 2013

EDMONTON - Mercury levels nine times higher than normal.
Levels of cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons four times the allowed standard for Canadian drinking water.

Those are the kinds of disturbing test results Dr. James Talbot, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, is seeing as he monitors a huge plume of coal mine waste water currently oozing down the Athabasca River.

“Our overriding concern is the safety of the drinking water,” says Talbot. “We’re advising people, ‘Don’t draw water as the plume is going by.’ ”

WAYPOINTS (Calgary) Volunteers

It would be challenging to the max to host an evening event like this without help from friends and family.

I was fortunate to be able to call on volunteers from the Calgary Women Fly Fishers Club, Darlene K, Colleen C. and Leigh M. as well as my daughter Dione.

They all did an excellent job running the 'front end'. Thank you to each of you.
