CALGARY — A year’s worth of coin drives, bake sales, donations and volunteer hours helping those less fortunate have led 18,000 Alberta youths to a massive one-day celebration.

Students and their teachers from across the province will converge on the Saddledome for Wednesday’s We Day Alberta event, searching for more strategies and inspiration around social activism and how to continue to make their world a better place.

As part of the Free the Children charity’s cross-Canada tour, students from grades 6 through 12 were individually selected to attend as a reward for unique global and local actions that made a difference in their communities.

“We are amazed at the level of involvement in Alberta, from Cold Lake, to Edmonton, to Calgary, to Lethbridge,” said James Lombardi, We Day director.

“Our mission continues to be to teach kids that caring is cool, that they can make a difference in the world right now. They don’t have to wait until they’re older.”

Participants will hear from an impressive list of world-renowned speakers and performers including former CNN talk-show host Larry King, actor Martin Sheen, former NHL player Theo Fleury, Paralympian Rick Hansen, pop-punk band Hedley and TV personality Jessi Cruickshank.
