Ladies Night Out

All photos, Copyright Bow River Shuttles All Rights Reserved 2012

We were pleased to host the Calgary Women Fly Fishers Club for an evening of fly fishing earlier this week. Here is what one of them had to say: "Thanks for a fabulous evening. I would have to call it perfect. I was able to hook 2 fish and land just the second. I was surprised given the warm evening."

A soup in bad taste

Shark fin soup, a Chinese food delicacy, has come under fire from activists who claim it has a devastating impact on shark populations.

Editorial: A soup in bad taste

Calgary Herald
July 12, 2012

We’re generally opposed to telling retailers and restaurants what they can and cannot sell, but we’re firmly on side with Ald. Brian Pincott in his effort to ban the sale of shark fin soup in the city.

It’s a “brutal and horrible practice,” says Pincott. “I personally believe this to be a crisis in our oceans.”

Even the government of China has joined the growing tide against the Asian delicacy, promising the dish won’t be served at state banquets within three years. We’re expecting more decisive action in Calgary, where the matter will be debated Monday at city council.

It’s estimated that between 26 million and 73 million sharks are killed annually for their fins, putting their numbers at risk. The fish are usually tossed back into the water alive, where they suffocate or are eaten by other predators, to save room on the boat. The fins, sadly, are among the most valuable seafood product in the world, fetching as much as $20,000 each.

A Calgary ban — which would affect only a handful of eateries in the city — would follow prohibitions in some Canadian cities and five U.S. states.

Pincott has been working with Shark Fin Free Calgary, which on Thursday afternoon had collected 8,238 names on its petition, with the goal of reaching the 10,000 mark. We say it’s high time to take this repugnant dish off the menu.

Calgary Zoo throws weight behind alderman’s push to ban shark fin soup

Brutal killing of sharks for Chinese food delicacy ‘appalling,’ says zoo president

By Bryan Weismiller,
Calgary Herald
July 13, 2012

A city alderman’s fight to ban shark fin soup picked up an ally Friday as the Calgary Zoo slammed the divisive dish.

Zoo officials announced they’re backing Ald. Brian Pincott’s motion to prohibit the possession of shark fins, which council is set to debate Monday.

“The statistics which show that millions of sharks are brutally killed each year solely for their fins is appalling and absolutely unsustainable,” zoo president Dr. Clement Lanthier said in a letter to Pincott.

PEI Fish Kill

For the second straight year Prince Edward Island’s Trout River has suffered yet another fish kill. This year’s fish kill can only be described as catastrophic.

So far over 1900 fish have been collected. Most of the dead fish are brook trout but 21 Atlantic salmon and a few hundred stickleback are among the dead. The largest brook trout recovered measured 50cm.

For additional information regarding this tragic event including links to recent CBC news articles please visit the Newsroom section of the Trout Unlimited Canada website.

We encountered a family of loons during our fishing excursion this evening. Two adults and two little ones.

It was very difficult to get a family shot.  The adults kept diving out of sight, as they are wont to do.  And although the chicks did not dive, their heads seemed to be underwater most of the time. :-)

Chick on the left, with head under water, one adult & chick centre, second adult far right.

A High Streamflow Advisory has been issued (on Monday July 09) for the Bow River and its tributaries upstream of the City of Calgary due to melting of mountain snowpack. The Bow River upstream of Calgary is rising in response to the increase in runoff from snowmelt and glacier melt.

"Just a quick update on happenings on the river from the last couple of days........

The river cleaned up some more through Sunday and Monday. It was actually looking pretty gooey yesterday. Flows are stable around 285 cms. The fish are certainly keyed in on the Stonefly nymphs right now and a few more fish are coming up to eat the dry flies. Once water levels drop a little the foam bug fishing should light up.

The general consensus amongst our guided trip from yesterday was that the river fished extremely well!

Got to spend Sunday and half of yesterday on the river and things are definitely getting better! Good number of nice Brown Trout, mostly on the Stonefly (only problem is most everything's happening about 2 feet lower than we'd like!)"

Fishing ‘a lost art,’ grandpa laments

Kid-friendly Inglewood trout pond opens on Alberta’s free fishing weekend

By Annalise Klingbeil,
Calgary Herald
July 7, 2012

As Gerry Button watches his grandsons cast fishing poles into a newly opened trout pond in Inglewood, memories of his own youth come flooding back.

He spent his childhood fishing in northern Saskatchewan, but the avid outdoorsman fears that in an era of computer games and other distractions, children just aren’t interested in angling anymore.

“Hunting and fishing — it’s a lost art for kids that live in a city like this,” Button said.

Button and his family were one of hundreds of people at Saturday’s grand opening of a child-friendly catch-and-release trout pond at Bow Habitat Station.

The opening coincides with Alberta’s free fishing weekend. People in the province are allowed to cast a line without a licence in any public water body, outside of national parks, until Tuesday.

The Contemporary Sportsman – Spring 2012

Lots of good reading and a number of great photo essays in this 284 page issue of the The Contemporary Sportsman

Believe it or not, we’d suggest that you start with the Letter from the publisher “A Positive Attitude Goes a Long Way”. It’s one of the best reads we’ve had in some time.

“Too Much of a Good Thing” is a much more serious article. Reading about the reasons behind the death of Grand Lakes St Marys in 2009, reminds us of what could happen, or may already be happening, in southern Alberta. Street runoff, untreated, directly into the Elbow and Bow River via storm sewers, E-coli in some irrigation canals, still no regulations regarding housing construction on flood plains.

For something much more upbeat, check out the feature article “Through a Guide’s Eyes”.

This is one of our briefest 'fishing reports' - just one photo. But what a story that photo tells!

Brian J. and his party floated a city section of the Bow River last Friday. This beautiful brown is one of the largest fish any of them had ever caught on the Bow.  They said it put up a good fight, and at one point, they were afraid they would lose it.

We checked back at around 6:00 pm and found the gate open. We understand that a good Samaritan cleared away the debris, and the gate was unlocked at around 4:00 pm. :-)

Piking

Here is the newest flick from Brent at Country Pleasures Fly Fishing showing his most recent piking adventures. Brent explored some of the prairie reservoirs in search of a monster pike. He found the super tanker, yet the fish would not commit to the bug (as seen in the first 10 seconds).... We'll get the big girl next year.

Fishing Report - from Fish Tales Fly Shop July 2 & 3

River report – July 3

The Bow at Calgary is now running at about 325 m3/s.

Conditions are slowly improving although the river is still higher than normal. Visibility is 8-10″ along the shore and the color has a slight greenish hue to it.

We’ve received a few reports from wade anglers who are having some good success nymphing.

Monday’s group of 9 float anglers – all experienced on the Bow River and mostly guides who work with Fish Tales – worked hard and had some success nymphing with san juan worms, peacock leeches, and stonefly nymphs. We’d asked them to go check out the conditions to determine fishability for upcoming trips particularily over the next few days. Based on what they experienced we cancelled trips Tuesday/Wednesday but plan to go Thursday.

A few of them headed back out for an early morning excursion this a.m. which will help determine the plan for the rest of this week. Once the Bow drops another 10 – 15% to somewhere around 270 or 280 m3/s we’ll be “happier.”

Jeff took An exploratory trip to the mountains over the long weekend. Here’s what he saw:

“Our local mountain streams have come a long way from opening weekend but everything is still running high. Typically the higher you go the better it gets with Cataract looking the cleanest out of them all. Livingstone not far behind, while curiously Racehorse and Dutch looked the worst and still need some time to adjust with only a foot of visibility. Close to the city, the Highwood and Sheep rivers are still churning winter’s waste away, while near the headwaters it cleans up a little and there were some taking advantage of that. Just like on the Bow, fish are holding in the slack water but flows make it un-crossable and therefore some tougher fishing. We opted to fish the Oldman in the gap for bulls and though this had maybe (big maybe) a foot of vis we did find some fish. There were a few bugs around but no major hatches to write home about. With the long range forecast looking good into next weekend this should return these streams to their normal selves.”
