New fish occupy Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery

Thu, Oct 3 : It’s a big day for the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery at Bow Habitat Station. Thousands of fish were evacuated from the hatchery when the floods struck. Now, new fish have arrived to refill the tanks. Mia Sosiak reports.

This is not T-ball for anglers. Yes, the Kids Can Catch Trout Pond in Pearce Estate Park is stocked and, yes, that name almost guarantees success, but the fish aren’t exactly jumping onto the shore.

“It’s easier at the start of the season,” says Tamara Unruh, public outreach programmer at the Bow Habitat Station (BHS), which oversees the pond. “The fish are smarter than you think, and they learn what a hook looks like.”

Fishing ‘a lost art,’ grandpa laments

Kid-friendly Inglewood trout pond opens on Alberta’s free fishing weekend

As Gerry Button watches his grandsons cast fishing poles into a newly opened trout pond in Inglewood, memories of his own youth come flooding back.

He spent his childhood fishing in northern Saskatchewan, but the avid outdoorsman fears that in an era of computer games and other distractions, children just aren’t interested in angling anymore.

“Hunting and fishing — it’s a lost art for kids that live in a city like this,” Button said.

Button and his family were one of hundreds of people at Saturday’s grand opening of a child-friendly catch-and-release trout pond at Bow Habitat Station.

The opening coincides with Alberta’s free fishing weekend. People in the province are allowed to cast a line without a licence in any public water body, outside of national parks, until Tuesday.

To kick off free fishing weekend and National Fishing Week, Bow Habitat Station held a grand opening celebration of its newest feature, the Kids Can Catch Trout Pond.

This photo is "The First Cast", officially opening the Kids Can Catch Trout Pond this morning.

The five individuals who participated in "The First Cast" were all speakers during the Grand Opening Celebration.

Decision considered: Federal government proposal to remove habitat protection from the Fisheries Act.

The federal government of Canada proposes to remove the habitat protection provisions of the Fisheries Act RSC 2000, c F-14, s 35. Countless Canadians have vigorously spoken out against this proposal because removing these provisions would be a critical and fundamental change not only to federal legislative approach, but also to the management, protection, and well-being of fisheries in Canada.

The federal government’s proposed change is questionable for three reasons. One, as the federal government has exclusive constitutional authority over inland and coastal fisheries it would be unconscionable to remove the habitat protection provisions from the Fisheries Act. Two, the evidence shows that the habitat provisions of the Fisheries Act have not posed significant economic barriers to development. Three, we already have the legal tools to assure an appropriate level of regulatory requirements with respect to project applications that will impact Canada’s fisheries.
