"A quick email to bev.yee@gov.ab.ca supporting more protection measures in the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan would be a great way to help bring in a new year...and a new era of respect for our headwaters.

Let's replace clearcutting with canopy-retention logging, institute a zero-harvest trapping quota on beavers whose work creates water-storing and flood-slowing wetlands, permit off-road vehicles only on properly maintained trails, and set aside the Castle drainage and other key water-producing areas in the mountains and foothills as wildland parks."

The National Energy Board’s Joint Review Panel (JRP) issued their report on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway Pipeline Project last week, just a few days before Christmas.

FLOOD - The Other “F” Word?

Gordon Lightfoot, the icon of Canadian folk music, intones, “When the skies of November turn gloomy” as a warning to ships plying the waters of Lake Superior, even big iron ore carriers. In land locked and generally water short Alberta, Lightfoot’s words don’t have the same cachet, but recent storm events have begun to sensitize us.

The floods of 1995, 2002, 2005 and now 2013 have made us start to search the skies of May and June for signs of impending doom. Spring rain used to fill our prairie souls with joy; now the same rain, especially when it persists for days, fills us with a sense of angst.

With recent experiences we’ve started to look at a flood as the other “F” word. Are we justified in thinking of this phenomenon in such harsh terms?

The Calgary Area Outdoor Council is holding an evening of information sharing about the SSRP.

What's good about it? What are the problems? How does it affect the outdoor community?

Katie Morrison (CPAWS), and Al Black (Climbers Access Society) will be making presentations and fielding questions about the SSRP.

The Calgary Area Outdoor Council wants to hear your views on the SSRP so that we may feed into the process. Our aim is to ensure the collective voice of the outdoor community is heard as this important plan nears its final implementation.

The deadline for public consultation is on January 15th and CAOC will be using information gathered this evening before submitting our position.

It's hard to think of a name more fitting than Watertown for a city routinely doused by a river, but that was small comfort this past April to citizens of the South Dakota town as they sandbagged their homes and watched water rise in their basements.
