I've learned a bit more about this. Calgary: brace yourself for an inundation the likes of which you have never imagined in your worst dreams when (not if) this proposed dam fails.
A dam of this sort has never been placed on a live river before. Even in the seasonal desert streams where they've been tried, there have been many failures. No river hydrologists were involved in the scheme before it was announced. They plan to put the whole river through a culvert (a culvert!!) that will be at least half a km long.
The entire river here is a shifting floodplain of loose gravel. Upstream are forests and slopes that will die and collapse into the floodwaters. In the first or second big flood, the culvert will fill with sediment and be plugged by flotsam.
National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada
December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.
As well as commemorating the 14 young women whose lives ended in an act of gender-based violence that shocked the nation, December 6 represents an opportunity for Canadians to reflect on the phenomenon of violence against women in our society. It is also an opportunity to consider the women and girls for whom violence is a daily reality, and to remember those who have died as a result of gender-based violence. And finally, it is a day on which communities can consider concrete actions to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

Patrick Lane: An open letter to all the wild creatures of the Earth
Victoria poet Patrick Lane received an honorary doctor of letters degree from the University of Victoria on Nov. 13. Lane, who has won the Governor General’s Literary Award and numerous other honours, has written 25 volumes of poetry, as well as fiction and non-fiction. He is known for what the university called the “gritty honesty” of his style. In keeping with his unique voice, his convocation speech was moving and powerful. Here is the text of his speech.
"It is 65 years ago, you’re 10 years old and sitting on an old, half-blind, grey horse. All you have is a saddle blanket and a rope for reins as you watch a pack of dogs rage at the foot of a Ponderosa pine.
High up on a branch, a cougar lies supine, one paw lazily swatting at the air. He knows the dogs will tire. They will slink away and then the cougar will climb down and go on with its life in the Blue Bush country south of Kamloops. It is a hot summer day. There is the smell of pine needles and Oregon grape and dust. It seems to you that the sun carves the dust from the face of the broken rocks, carves and lifts it into the air where it mixes with the sun. Just beyond you are three men on horses."

The Castle Special Place provides clean water for communities and farms downstream, is home to at-risk species such as grizzly bear and bull trout, and offers world-class recreational opportunities. For more than 20 years, Alberta communities, conservation organizations, recreationalist and local businesses have been calling for legislated protection of the Castle Special Place.
Yet the draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, released in October, recommends protecting only the Castle’s rocky mountain tops as a Wildland Park and proposes to designate a few of its valleys as ill-defined Conservation Management Areas. The rest of this iconic landscape, including its headwaters, is left unprotected and is slated for forestry and road-building.

Then came Cyber Monday, an Internet-shopping spree born out of clever marketing to extend the buying craziness through the weekend.

Environment Canada has given AquaBounty Technologies the go-ahead to produce genetically-modified salmon eggs on a commercial scale at its P.E.I. facility, the company has announced.
AquaBounty's hatchery in eastern P.E.I. has been a research-only production site, but now the company is saying the facility in Bay Fortune has the go-ahead from Environment Canada to produce the fish eggs on a commercial scale.
