Alberta’s wetlands policy turns out to be all wet

Environment Minister Diana McQueen announces a new wetlands policy on Tuesday at the Clifford E Lee Nature Sanctuary near Edmonton. Photo, Bruce Edwards, Edmonton Journal

Alberta Wetland Policy - September 2013

"New policy aims to minimize the destruction of wetlands", By Sheila Pratt, Calgary Herald Wed Sept 11 2013

The provincial government will provide flexibility in its new policy to protect wetlands and will allow industries to pay into a public education fund or build a marshland elsewhere to compensate for destroying a wetland.

The new policy, which moves away from the no-net loss principle, calls for a hierarchy of wetlands with a policy geared to offer more protection to "high value" wetlands, said Diana McQueen, minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

Bow River Fishing Report (Sept 11) from Fish Tales Fly Shop

Bow River Fishing Report (Sept 11) from Fish Tales Fly Shop

September – historically one of the favored times on the Bow – is here and with it are the usual tricos, hoppers, backswimmers, boatman, and more.

Reports from walk n’ wade anglers have been good and folks are starting to find areas holding small pods of fish.

Bow River-Post Flood 2013

The summer has presented us with a never ending supply of angler and non-angler opinions as to fishing quality since June 22 & 22, 2013, when the Bow River and Highwood grew to levels not seen by anyone alive today.

It all started with "experts" indicating the fishery would be decimated, news media showing a single fish left on Memorial Drive but leaving the impression that populations were decimated. A few weeks later some media did interviews with individuals who make their living from the river who basically said things would be "business as usual". And most recently there were television reports with Bow River guides who, on television, said that fish populations were the same as previous years, somewhere around 2500 fish per mile.

By Jamie Hall, Edmonton Journal September 3, 2013

EDMONTON - Edmonton is rolling out the “green carpet” for the country music industry and its fans as the city gets set to host the Canadian Country Music Association awards for the sixth time in its 31-year history.

The decidedly country twist on Hollywood’s red-carpet tradition — “green carpet” symbolizes the land — debuted last year when the CCMA awards were held in Saskatoon, to the delight of country fans gathered outside the venue to get a peek at their favourite stars.

“Fishing provides that connection with the whole living world. It gives you the opportunity of being totally immersed, turning back into yourself in a good way,” wrote acclaimed poet Ted Hughes.

Continuing that it's “a form of meditation, some form of communion with levels of yourself that are deeper than the ordinary self.”

Interestingly, if the first word that begins the statement, “Fishing,” was replaced by the word “Art,” the meaning would also be valid.

The two activities are conceptually synonymous. Great art, great water, great tackle, great fish, the Okotoks Art Gallery brings you a reflection on this theme in The Art of Fishing, featuring paintings, original prints and glass sculptures.

Swerve/Calgary Herald, August 28, 2013

This is not T-ball for anglers. Yes, the Kids Can Catch Trout Pond in Pearce Estate Park is stocked and, yes, that name almost guarantees succes
s, but the fish aren’t exactly jumping onto the shore.

“It’s easier at the start of the season,” says Tamara Unruh, public outreach programmer at the Bow Habitat Station (BHS), which oversees the pond. “The fish are smarter than you think, and they learn what a hook looks like.”
