The CFO fly fishing reel has been the choice of technical fly fisherman since 1971. Reengineered to be lighter, smoother, and tougher. Although this fly fishing reel is machined using the most modern of materials and state-of-the-art machining technology, the CFO disc drag fly reel is a reverent nod to fly fishing tradition. The reel's signature look and sound are synonymous for thousands of fly fisherman with great moments on the water. It matches as perfectly in spirit, looks and performance with Orvis Superfine or bamboo fly rods as it does with our high-tech Helios fly rods.

World Toilet Day - Nov 19

World Toilet Day - Nov 19

Equality and dignity is the theme of World Toilet Day 2014. The campaign will inspire action to end open defecation and put spotlight on how access to improved sanitation leads to a reduction in assault and violence on women and girls.

Having to defecate openly infringes on human safety and dignity. Women and girls risk rape and abuse as they wait until night falls because they lack of access to a toilet that offers privacy.

"Protecting city from future floods makes economic sense"

Photo, Courtesy Calgary Herald

Bow River Shuttles writes: "There were two items in the Calgary Herald this morning related to the proposed flood mitigation project in Springbank, on the western outskirts of the City of Calgary.

One was a couple of paragraphs in a column
by Barry Cooper. The other was a full op-ed piece written by The Calgary River Communities Action Group."

"All Prentice needs is a little common sense"

by Barry Cooper, Calgary Herald, Nov 11, 2014

... Ramping up the disaster recovery program to process flood damage applications made sense. On the other hand, the massive flood mitigation program for Springbank, does not. According to an engineering professor at the University of Western Ontario, Slobodan Simonovic, it was “unbelievable” to support such a project without thorough cost-benefit analysis. The premier said it was cost-effective, but offered no evidence.

Perhaps the announcement was made to help Education Minister Gordon Dirks’ election in Calgary-Elbow, which was badly flooded in 2013. Or perhaps we need to keep an eye on who gets the $200-million contract to build it. Either way, it looks like machine politics...

"Protecting city from future floods makes economic sense"

by Tony Morris and Brenda Leeds Binder, Co-Presidents of the Calgary River Communities Action Group, Calgary Herald, Nov 11, 2014

...The articles seem to attempt to pit homeowners of Elbow River communities against Springbank landowners. The Springbank Off-Stream Diversion will not only protect lives and property, but hundreds of millions of dollars of city infrastructure, private and public capital project in the downtown core and river communities and ensure continued prosperity of the economic engine of Canada...

Eyeball to eyeball with Canada’s migrating salmon

BBC Travel, In Canada Nature & Outdoors
By Amanda Castleman, 02 November 2014

My brain froze as I submerged into the cold water of British Columbia’s Shuswap Lake. But the discomfort paled
as I watched sockeye salmon – hundreds of cherry-tinted fish with moss-green heads – swirl overhead like a kaleidoscope. At the end of an epic 4,000km journey, they were waiting to swim the final leg upstream to spawn and die.

The poseur's guide to Yvon Chouinard

The poseur's guide to Yvon Chouinard

By Jacquie Moore, Swerve October 30, 2014

While a flannel shirt and hemp pants will ensure you look the part of a rugged, arts-loving rock-climber, boning up on the biography of Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival guest Yvon Chouinard will ensure you sound the part, too.

Falcons First: Before he became America’s most famous rock-climber/ethical businessman, Yvon Chouinard was a falconer. In 1953, at the age of 14, he joined the Southern California Falconry Club and learned to train birds for hunting—a hobby that required him to climb cliffs to find falcon aeries. Just saying “aeries” instead of “nests” will convince others of your seasoned outdoorsmanship.

Climb Every Mountain (First): Chouinard became famous in mountaineering circles in the 1960s when he crossed several “world’s-firsts” off his list. He participated in the first ascent of the North American Wall in California’s Yosemite Valley and (local trivia = bonus Poseur points!) he was first up the north face of Mount Edith Cavell. Most important, Chouinard became famous for his focus on the use of a rock’s natural features, a style that altered climbing culture.

Putting the We in We Day

By Stephen Hunt, Calgary Herald November 1, 2014

Floor seats. That's what 20 lucky students from St. Gregory School in southwest Calgary found out they were getting to attend We Day, which rolls into Calgary at the Scotiabank Saddledome Nov. 3. In the case of St. Gregory, one of 135 schools sending 3,000 students to the event, what landed them on the list was an initiative that took place Thursday, during We Scare Hunger Day: a food drive with a scary movie theme.

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard puts mega-dams in the crossfire with new documentary, DamNation

By Eric Volmers, Calgary Herald October 30, 2014

Yvon Chouinard is not one to mince words.

“Every project that man has ever done is going to have to come out some day, I don’t care what it is,” says the 75-year-old environmentalist with typical bluntness. “What happens normally is these things are put up and when they are no longer useful people walk away from them. And, at best, it’s left to the taxpayers to remediate and to clean up.”

Which is the thrust behind DamNation, the environmental documentary that will be screened at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. The film is executive produced by Chouinard on behalf of his company Patagonia, the manufacturer of high-end outdoor apparel that the businessman founded back in 1973. It is a no-holds-barred look at the environmental havoc caused by dams in the U.S. over the past 90 years, particularly on fish populations.

From soldier to champion for mental health

From soldier to champion for mental health

Personal contact is key, he says

Charlie Fidelman, Calgary Herald/Postmedia News/Montreal Gazette, October 30, 2014

Stéphane Grenier stepped off a Hercules aircraft under a blast of gunfire with the Canadian peacekeeping forces during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. That, recalled the retired lieutenant-colonel, “was the beginning of the rest of my life.”

He became addicted to the adrenalin of dangerous war zones and peace missions — Afghanistan, Cambodia, Kuwait and Haiti to name a few — anything was better than home. Civilians, he felt, couldn’t relate to soldiers returning from war-torn areas with a combination of grief, stress, trauma and depression.
