Andy Mill on Fly Casting in the Wind

by Kirk Deeter, video by Tim Romano

Andy Mill is a former Olympic skier, and he’s also one of the most decorated saltwater tournament anglers in the world. Here, he talks about a common problem that many fly fishers must contend with, from the open flats to the river canyons… casting in the wind.

Mill suggests a few simple tricks. Keeping the cast low with a sidearm stroke can solve many problems. But the real key, he suggests, is getting your fly and line in the water, and then letting the resistance of lifting that fly off the water create the tension that loads the rod.

Too many false casts in the wind are only invitations for trouble. Let the water load the line, and with practice, the wind becomes less of a concern.
