Every year, Calgary River Valleys survey Brown Trout spawning sites (“redds”) on the Lower Elbow River, as an indication of aquatic habitat health.
Brown Trout spawn in the fall so for a day in November, volunteers float and walk from the Glenmore Dam to the Bow River confluence, counting redds.
Our surveys are led by experienced aquatic biologists and conducted by CRV volunteers and students interested in pursuing further research or work in the biological sciences.
If you know of any students who might be interested in joining us this year, please ask them to Mac Hickley, 403 268-4867.
These surveys are coordinated by CRV and hosted by the Riverwatch Institute of Alberta, supported by the RBC Blue Water Project.
Similar surveys are conducted annually by staff of the federal Dept of Fisheries & Oceans and provincial Fish & Wildlife Division, and we compare our data to help ensure consistency.
