Pipelines and West Coast Oil Tankers
Last week, several stories related to pipelines made the news. One was an unexpected announcement by Kinder Morgan on their expansion plans for their TransMountain pipeline into B.C.'s Lower Mainland.
Oilsands debate shifts to west coast
By Stephen Ewart,

April 20, 2012
The focal point of the oilsands debate, which moved from the pastoral U.S. Midwest to the pristine B.C. wilderness, has now shifted to the decidedly troubled waters off Canada's West Coast in response to a plan to ship more oil through the port at Vancouver.
The contentious proposals to pipe oilsands bitumen to the B.C. coast are predicated on moving the oil on tankers to Pacific Rim energy markets.
Amid strident opposition to the 525,000-barrela-day Northern Gateway pipeline plan by Enbridge Inc., rival Kinder Morgan surprised people this month by announcing a similar-sized expansion to its 300,000-barrel-a-day TransMountain pipeline into B.C.'s Lower Mainland.
Retrofitting the TransMountain line could be complete by 2017.
Either way, the spectre of hundreds of super tankers - a.k.a. Very Large Crude Carriers, or VLCCs, to the industry - off the B.C. Coast at Vancouver or the Queen Charlotte Islands has made the prospect of oil spills the latest focus of oilsands opponents.
Admittedly, the stakes - both environmental and economic - are high.

Fracking Alberta: Ruling advances woman’s tainted water lawsuit

Documents must be released, says Alberta information boss

CALGARY — A Drumheller-area woman’s quest to learn if coal bed methane drilling polluted her well water has been given a boost by the province’s information czar.
In a scathing decision that ends a three-year battle by Rosebud resident Jessica Ernst, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has ordered a government agency to release thousands of pages of documents that could reveal how scientists concluded the contamination was naturally occurring.
Adjudicator Teresa Cunningham ordered Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures to refund the entire $4,125 fee charged for processing Ernst’s request because keeping test results, draft reports and even proposed news releases under wraps with no legal basis contravened her right to timely disclosure.
“The amount of severing done and the lack of justification for it has resulted in the applicant being deprived of her rights,” Cunningham said.
“The public body withheld information for reasons that were not borne out by the records, and charged inflated costs for processing the access request.”
The decision is another sharp rap on the knuckles for a government the independent commissioner has frequently criticized for fostering a culture of secrecy.
Ernst said she was shocked but pleased with a ruling that could help her assemble evidence to prove her $33-million legal claim that energy giant Encana Corp.’s drilling near the hamlet southwest of Drumheller contaminated dozens of wells and that a failure to investigate by provincial regulators was part of a government coverup.

Fish Tales Spey-O-Rama - April 22
This on-river session will be the same format as previous Fish Tales Spey-O-Ramas. A Fish Tales staffer will give a brief spey-casting demonstration which will be followed up with the opportunity for attendees to try out a two-hand setup. Fish Tales demo rods and line setups will be available to all attendees and we encourage folks who already have gear to bring it along.
This is a casual and interactive event that allows folks who are interested in getting in to spey a chance to try before they buy. Anglers who are already using spey rods can try out different setups or a new line on an existing setup.
Location: Bankside in Fish Creek Park. Session will run Sunday, April 22 from 1 – 3 p.m. (weather permitting - looks great at this point!) Please dress for the weather including waders. No pre-registration required.
This is part of our Sunday seminar series that runs most Sundays from late October through December and mid-January through April. Our final session this spring will be on Sunday, April 29 when we'll be hosting our second season of the Rio Distance Challenge and a single hand tune up day.

REVIEW
Lunchbox Theatre presents The Whimsy State or the Principality of Outer Baldonia by AJ Demers through April 21. Tickets: 403-265-4292. Rating 3 ½ out of five
Stories where the little guy gets to play the big guys' game are always fun.
And the truer the story, the better the fiction.
The new Lunchbox comedy - The Whimsy State or the Principality of Outer Baldonia by Loose Moose improv alumnus and novice playwright AJ Demers - is no exception. That's thanks to a tight script - based on a little-known footnote in Canadian history - and some amusing performances from the four-person cast.
The intriguing premise of Demers's 65-minute play dates from the establishment in 1948 - complete with charter, flag, and a small contingent of military-minded (sort of) fishermen - of the Principality of Outer Baldonia. The island nation of barely four acres lay about 15 kilometres off the coast of Nova Scotia from Yarmouth.

Last week, Dave and Amelia Jensen of Fly Fish Alberta joined a couple hundred Orvis-endorsed guides for the annual Orvis Western Guide Rendezvous in Missoula.
The day prior to the event, several participants got to spend a bit of time on the Clearwater and Blackfoot Rivers.
Here are a few photos from those trips that show what that landscape looks like this early in the season.
