It was a busy first day at the Expo. Traffic was steady from the time the doors opened at noon until well past mid-afternoon.

It was wonderful to meet quite a number of my shuttle clients who stopped by my booth.

Ticket sales for my Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival went well. We have only about two dozen left! — at Spruce Meadows.

Room for the river report moves focus beyond big infrastructure

Giving the province’s rivers more room to grow by revisiting property buyouts, preventing future floodplain development and widening riverbanks is an effective way to both mitigate future floods and manage watersheds, according to a new report.

The study, which was submitted to the province in late December, involved input from water managers, watershed groups, municipalities, environmental groups, experts and the interested public.

It examined an approach called Room for the River — used in the Netherlands as an effective way to manage high water levels along its rivers by giving them more room — after former environment minister Robin Campbell visited Holland and asked for a report on whether similar concepts could work in Alberta.

That was the dilemma facing Alanna Mitchell, a former Globe & Mail science reporter, as she laboured through an earlier Toronto run of Sea Sick, her solo show that opens Thursday night as part of the 2015 High Performance Rodeo.

Ash spilled in train derailment could harm fish in Banff creek

Authorities are concerned about the long-term health of fish in a Banff creek after a freight train derailed last week, spilling several hundred tonnes of potentially toxic cargo into the water and surrounding area.

A Parks Canada official said Monday much of the spilled fly ash — a byproduct of coal production that can disrupt the local ecosystem — has settled to the bottom of 40 Mile Creek.
