Electrofishing on the Bow River - Sept 12-16
Alberta Sustainable Resource Development(ASRD)-Fisheries Management Branch will be electrofishing on the Bow River between the WID Weir and Carseland Weir from September 12-16, 2011.
Biologists are collecting important data to better understand fish populations and to make informed decisions on how to better manage the Bow River fishery for every angler's enjoyment.
If you see ASRD staff electrofishing in the area you are fishing, please exit the river immediately until crews have passed.
Please be assured that staff operating these vessels are highly trained and consider angler safety as paramount.

The trucks and trailers were lined up along the gravel bar at McKinnon Flats this morning, launching their boats for a great day of fly fishing on the Bow River.
High up on the ridge, a few hundred yards from the McKinnon gate, the combines were lined up, preparing for a day of harvesting.
Our cold, late spring caused all farming activity to be several weeks behind. Swathing and combining have only begun in recent days. In most years, we would have seen this starting in mid-August.

Grassland selloff: Alberta wants to convert native prairie to irrigation land

The Conservatives are at it again. It’s like watching the whack-a-mole game at the midway.
Last year, they got slammed down for secretly trying to sell off native grassland to a farm corporation that wanted to turn it in to a giant potato patch.
Now they’re back, with a similar proposal. We’re talking 65 square kilometers of land!! And they want a proposal that involves irrigation!
They would be plowing under a sizable percentage of what native grasslands remain, and they say that they would put the money from the sale in to the Enhanced Land Stewardship Fund, which is used to purchase and protect lands with high conservation value.
Huh???
Destroy land that has high value, in order to buy other land that has high value?? What’s wrong with that picture?
Nobody wants this to happen. Even the Calgary Herald wrote an editorial opposing the project.

The province's decision to sell 6,500 hectares of vital grassland habitat is a short-sighted mistake that flies in the face of recommendations from the government's own advisory council.
The Alberta government has put out a request for proposals to develop Cypress County native grasslands into irrigated farmland. These are the same Crown lands that were offered under a secret deal last fall to SLM Spud Farms, but which fell through amid public criticism over the lack of transparency.

Hot, 29 degrees outside and the fishing was the same
Hey Michelle, and crew. Thanks for the great service again, you even got my vehicle down to Fish creek 1 hour sooner than I first needed.
A couple quick notes on the day: Hot, 29 degrees outside and the fishing was the same.
I am not going to put out any numbers but I will say that the drift we did on Saturday was one of the best I have ever had.
One bank we bombed with hoppers was nuts, literally every second cast we either had a fish or missed a fish or saw one miss our fur, feathers and foam. We landed four off that one short corner and missed a good hand full of others.
All decent fish on Saturday in the 16"-22" range.
All fish were on drys and I hate to say it but the hot fly of the day was a good old Adams, high and dry.
The river looked great and this was the first drift we had done since just before runoff and it made me wonder why I drive to the higher rivers sometimes!
