The Town of Banff and Parks Canada are continuing to
investigate ways to cost-effectively decommission a dam on Forty Mile Creek to
avoid the risk of the aging structure breaking.
At a cost of $6,500, the Town hired an expert consultant
to do a structural assessment of the dam earlier this summer and to investigate
the risk of the dam failing.
Town of Banff officials say the inspection, completed by
EBA Engineering Consultants in August, revealed there were no serious
structural concerns at this time.
“The inspection shows there’s no reason to ring any alarm
bells; there’s no imminent threat or immediate risk of failure,” said Adrian
Field, the Town of Banff’s engineering manager.
“But we don’t want to be in a position of ever dealing
with dam failure, so we do need to make a plan because it can’t stay there
forever. The question has been whether there is a liability to the Town or to
Parks if this thing breaks.”
