Anniversary to see Bow at peak flow

The Bow River laps at the lower deck of the Centre Street Bridge during last June’s flood. A forecast that suggests the river will crest on the one-year anniversary of the flood predicts the water will be about 2.5 metres lower this year.

But the peak flows that a global flood forecasting project calculates are possible around June 21 this year are extremely unlikely to cause any major damage to the city.

“The level in the Bow may rise in the second half of the month, but the values are well below those forecast before last year’s terrible flood,” project hydrologist Lorenzo Alfieri said in an email interview.

“Of course, forecasts may be subject to change, particularly in the case of sudden storms causing flash floods, which have very short predictability.”
