Interesting Times

Interesting Times

by Don Meredith, April 21, 2015.

[Note: The following was first published in the March 2015 Alberta Outdoorsmen.]

"...What’s happened over the last few years with fish, wildlife and environmental conservation in this province is just one example of the damage overwhelming majorities can do. Somewhere in the backrooms of our successive Progressive Conservative governments, it was decided that our fish, wildlife and environment needed to get out of the way of petroleum and other resource development. The dismantling of the Fish and Wildlife Division was just one step along the way..."

Here's a story we thought worthy of mention on Earth Day.

A former chief of the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation, Marilyn Baptiste led her community in defeating one of the largest proposed gold and copper mines in British Columbia that would have destroyed Fish Lake—a source of spiritual identity and livelihood for the Xeni Gwet’in.

She is the North America winner of the 2015 Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest award for grassroots environmental activists.

The Cost of Trout Fishing

The Cost of Trout Fishing

By Douglas M. Thompson, New York Times, Apr 10, 2015

"... But my rod will be collecting dust at home. I reluctantly gave up fishing 10 years ago after I saw what a century of stocking nonnative fish was doing to the landscape I love."

Along the Bow River 2015

The weather in April can be a crap shoot. It's great to be able to get out midweek to catch what good weather there is. That what these folks did this week.

National Volunteer Week 2015 - April 12-18

National Volunteer Week 2015 - April 12-18

'Volunteers are part of the ripple effect'

A volunteer action is like a stone thrown in a lake: its effect has a direct impact. At the same time, like ripples, volunteer efforts reach out far and wide to improve communities. Undeniably, volunteers rock.

Michelle Magotiaux, Owner/Operator Bow River Shuttles, would like to say 'thank you' to all of the volunteers who have helped us over the years at our various events, including our "Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival” and our "Blue Ribbon Bow River Cleanup".

Most of these volunteers have come from Casting for Life, Calgary Women's Fly Fishers Club, Calgary Hook & Hackle Club, Trout Unlimited Canada, Fly Fishing Team Canada, Canadian Youth National Fly Fishing Team, Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Canada, Southern Alberta Fly Fishing League and Western Sky Land Trust.

You know who you are! Many thanks!

TUC "The Big One" - A Look Back

TUC volunteers Stan Ainslie (left) and Bill Peters setting up the Bucket Raffle items, including a patio propane heat lamp.

The Trout Unlimited Canada 31st Annual National Conservation Dinner (Calgary) was another success story. Despite the current state of our economy, related to the fall in oil and gas prices, supporters of cold water conservation and the trout that live there stepped up to the plate once again.

Although the final numbers are not yet in, Director of Special Events Don Pike reports that the total funds raised may approach the $700,000 mark.

Dozens of volunteers, along with TUC staff, pitch in to make this happen.

One small group of volunteers shows up the morning of the event to set up and display all the donated items.

A "Fly Fishing Movie Madness" package was donated by Michelle Magotiaux/Bow River Shuttles. It included the four movies from Confluence Films - Drift, Rise, Connect and Waypoints.

The new tablet based Silent Auction bid system proved to be a hit. It allowed guests to bid on items right from their tables.

A New Lease on Life for TUC-Bow River Chapter

Trout Unlimited Canada CEO Silvia D’Amelio chatting with Chapter member

A great turnout for the Trout Unlimited Canada - Bow River Chapter AGM - the best ever by most accounts - has resulted in a new lease on life for the Chapter.

Seven new Directors were elected to the Board, in addition to current President Garth Sobey staying on to help with the transition.

Big props go out to Garth, as well as to outgoing Directors Craig Cooper and Craig Robbillard, for keeping the Chapter alive over the past dozen or more years!

A special note from Jim McLennan (McLennan Fly Fishing)

A special note from Jim McLennan (McLennan Fly Fishing)

"After many years, I'm pleased to again be involved with a fly-fishing television show.

Fly Fusion Television begins airing Tuesday evening. I co-host the series with Fly Fusion Magazine's founding editor and Stream Lines author, Derek Bird. This Tuesday (April 7) Derek and I introduce the first of six episodes of authentic fly-fishing at 6:30 Mountain Standard Time. FFTV is broadcast on the World Fishing Network, and if you don't already have access to this network, contact your provider. April is also free preview month on WFN.

At the conclusion of the show everyone's invited to submit questions and comments for Derek and me via the Fly Fusion Facebook page."

Trusted Service Provider - Don Mills

Only a few times in the past have we shared information on one of our personal service providers. One of them would have been Kingsboro Auto Service (1975) Ltd., 4674 Macleod Trail SW. We have had our vehicles serviced there since 1972, at which time it was in the hands of the father-in-law of the current owner/operator, Hank Isaak.

This time around, we are making note of the only vehicle salesperson that we have ever dealt with more than once. We have found Don Mills of High River's Country Chrysler to be a person of integrity who will treat you the way customers should be treated. Remember that name.

Hoey: Learning to fly fish the Bow River is easier than you think

by Jim Hoey, Calgary Herald, March 27, 2015

I grew up fly-fishing. I am a Calgarian and I was raised by the Bow River. I know how special it is.

I am always interested in getting people involved in learning about and trying the fine sport of fly-fishing. So many people saw the great Robert Redford film “A River Runs Through It “and think, ‘wow I will never be able to do something like that’. In actuality you do not begin casting 100 feet of line. You begin much more humbly and it is not nearly as difficult as it looks.
