Kent and his friends will be enjoying a day on the Bow River in one of the boats from Bow River Drift Boat Rentals - a Clackacraft.

Kent usually rows his own tandem pontoon boat - one of the few such boats on the Bow.

However, today he wanted to take two friends out, and needed a bigger boat.

South Fork Skiff on the Bow today

Photo, © Bow River Shuttles

Gary and Trent, visiting the Bow River from Northern Alberta, picked up one of our Bow River Drift Boat Rentals boats this morning. They'll be spending the next three days exploring our river.

They've walked and waded the Bow many times in the past. But this will be their first float trips.

If you see a South Fork Skiff over the next few days, give them a wave.

Fish Creek Park Boat Launch is Now Open

We were advised by Fish Creek Park officials this morning that the boat launch is now open for use.

The repair work has not yet been done as a result of a delay in getting a permit approved. However, the boat launch will remain open until they sort this out.

Beavers— An Ally or an Inconvenient Species?

Beavers— An Ally or an Inconvenient Species?

by Lorne Fitch, Aug 18, 2014 Via: Alberta WaterPortal

While beavers have sometimes been considered a nuisance, recent studies suggest beavers can play a role in flood prevention and can help even protect waterways. Today’s blog post was written by Lorne Fitch, Provincial Riparian Specialist with Cows and Fish: Alberta Riparian Habitat Management Society.

Western wildfires go global and go ‘pyro’

This photo dated July 14, 2014 of the Birch Creek fire, taken out window of aircraft, gives a sense of the scale of the fires in the Northwest Territories. (HANDOUT/NWTFire)

Western wildfires go global and go ‘pyro’

Bow River Shuttles writes: "Smoke from forest fires (or wildfires, as they're now called) burning in B.C. and the Northwest Territories began showing up in Alberta back in mid-July. Our view west t
o the Canadian Rockies has often been obscured, and downtown Calgary, driving in from the Bow River, has sometimes been barely visible. On occasion, smoke has settled in along the Bow River valley, south east of Calgary. It turns out that this smoke can now be seen in other parts of the world!"

Raging fires pollute the planet
Smoke clouds can be spotted from outer space
by Margaret Munro, Calgary Herald/Postmedia News/O.Canada.com Tuesday, August 05, 2014

Smoke from Canada's wildfires, which have burned vast tracks of forest in B.C. and the Northwest Territories, has been spotted as far away as Portugal.

The smoke's travel is fuelled in part by incredible clouds created by the fires that act like chimneys. They funnel smoke and ash as high as 10 to 15 kilometres into the atmosphere.

Anatomy of a mine disaster

A graphic of the Mount Polley Mine and surrounding area shows the debris going into Quesnel Lake caused by a tailings pond breach near the town of Likely, B.C..
Photograph by: Special to The Sun, Vancouver Sun

"The millions of cubic metres of water that poured out of Mount Polley mine when the dam collapsed had failed provincial water quality guidelines for human and aquatic health in the past, according to the B.C. environment ministry and early Wednesday the Cariboo Regional District declared a state of local emergency.

Data sent to the ministry by Mount Polley as recently as Monday showed that selenium concentration exceeded drinking water guidelines by a factor of 2.8 times.

There have also been drinking water exceedances of sulphate over the last few years, according to information supplied to The Vancouver Sun by environment ministry spokesman Dave Crebo..."
