Bow River Fishing Report - Mar 29 2015

"Thanks to Dennis K. for this fishing report and photos!" - Michelle, Owner/Operator, Bow River Shuttles

Thank you so much for the shuttle today. We did the float from glenmore to fish creek.

What a nice day to spend on the water today. Besides the wind that blew upstream making some sections a bit more work to drift down. There were a couple other boats on the water.

Really slow fishing wise. Had to work really hard to get fish to the boat. A couple on but broke off. Worked all the water with streamers and nymphs. Couldn't hook up anything solid. Still nice to be out on such a beautiful day! All in all a good day

Thank you for your shuttle service. Have never seen my dashboard cleaner!

Looking forward to the next float. Will be calling you soon. :-)

- Dennis K.

Wild Fish Video Journal - Vol 1: The Montana Story

In 1974, Montana did something that stunned anglers across the state and the nation: it stopped stocking trout in streams and rivers that supported wild trout populations.

After decades of use and millions of dollars invested, hatchery production was not helping, and in fact was the leading cause of the collapse of the fishery.

Ground-breaking research on the Madison River in the late 1960s and early '70s organized by fisheries biologist Richard Vincent led to that decision. His study results showed that as hatchery production increased, trout abundance decreased, and native stocks were displaced.

Wathersheds Under Threat

It's almost a traffic jam in the Waiparous area northwest of Calgary, a haven for off-road vehicles of every size, shape and form as campers frolic in the area Sunday. Photo by Ted Jacob/Calgary Herald (for City story by Falice Chin)

The Alberta Conservation Association brought attention to two events that they fear could cause damage to their respective watersheds. One in May in Ghost-Waiparous and the other in June in the Castle wilderness area.

The Calgary Herald picked up the story two days ago:

Off-road vehicle events prompt concern about watershed health

by Colette Derworiz, Calgary Herald, March 11, 2015

An environmental group is worried two off-road vehicle events planned for this spring and summer will damage sensitive watershed and ruin the recreational experience for other trail users.

Boat Launch Report - March 2015 (#1 of 3)

17th Ave SE/Blackfoot Trail (Cushing Bridge). The gate to this launch has now been locked for more than a year. The Calgary Fire Department doesn't want to share. You'll need a boat that you can carry down to the river from the street (17 A St SE). That's the road that leads to the Bow Habitat Station & Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery.

It was time for our annual early-March tour of Bow River boat launches. Here is what we saw.

Glenmore Trail (Graves Landing). A few boaters have already launched from here over the past couple of weeks.

22X/Fish Creek Park. The gate is still locked. It's usually unlocked as soon as the snow and ice has melted from the road leading down to the launch. That could be any day now. In the meantime, you need a boat that you can carry down to the water.
