Longview residents push for protection of water from oil and gas operations

Longview residents push for protection of water from oil and gas operations

By Colette Derworiz, Calgary Herald February 26, 2013

Some residents in Longview, a small community south of Calgary, are worried about the village’s water supply due to oil and gas operations in the area.

“We don’t feel like the water is being tested often enough,” said Donna Bieda, one of the residents who signed a petition asking the village or the oil company to put in a permanent monitoring system.

On Wednesday evening, the village’s council will hold a public forum to address any outstanding concerns…

…The concerns come due to hydraulic fracturing or fracking, which uses water to free gas and oil from underground rock. Some suggest the use of fracking could contaminate water.

Sold Out!! Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival 2013

The 2013 edition of Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival was a sold out success!! Many thanks to all of our fans and supporters for joining us for an absolutely wonderful evening.

Special thanks to our 'Friends of Back Cast FFFF' for setting up their display tables and helping add a true feeling of 'festival' to this special annual event.

Big THANKS to all the 'Supporters of Back Cast FFFF' for their donated items. The funds raised will go a long way towards helping the Canadian Youth National Fly Fishing Team attend their planned events during 2013.

Thanks also to Kyle Snarr, Canadian Youth National Fly Fishing Team member, for making a special effort to ensure his display table was set up before he had to leave to teach a fly tying class at Bow River Troutfitters. He then made it back before the end of the evening, just in time to help out with the draws, watch the final film, and thank everyone for their support of the Youth Team. :-)

Ecologists want plastics declared hazardous

Ecologists want plastics declared hazardous

Margaret Munro, Postmedia News/Calgary Herald, Feb 19, 2013

Despite efforts to reduce and recycle plastic, the planet is still awash with wayward wrappers, bottles and bags.

Almost half of the world's marine animals and a fifth of its seabirds are at risk of becoming entangled or eating the stuff, which has now prompted an international group of ecologists to call for the worst plastics to be declared hazardous materials.

Without action, they estimate, the planet could have another 33 billion tonnes of plastic by 2050.

That would fill 2.75 billion garbage trucks, enough to wrap around the planet 800 times if lined up end to end, the researchers say in a commentary in the current issue of the journal Nature.

Metro plan impasse leads to water supply issues

The City of Calgary spent $170 million to upgrade its Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant in 2009. Many projects outside of city limits would like to tap into the supply, but a disagreement over the growth plan for the region is preventing it. Photograph by: Ted Jacob , Calgary Herald

Metro plan impasse leads to water supply issues

Rural projects tap distant reservoirs

By Jason Markusoff, Calgary Herald February 18, 2013

CALGARY — Calgary has ample water from its state-of-the-art treatment plants that it’s willing to share with neighbours, provided they agree to a few rules.

But they won’t agree, and they’re looking for water elsewhere in a swath of Alberta with small rivers and a tight water supply.

Stoney Trail SE/Calgary Ring Road. May 2012

If you're heading to Policeman's Flats, and especially to McKinnon Flats, you can't not notice this.

For the second year running, we had a ring side seat to all of the construction that's been going on at the various interchanges along highway 22X.

We'll have to endure one more season of this. The project is scheduled to wrap up in the fall of 2013.

Sport angling a runaway leader in B.C.’s fishing and aquaculture sector

Jeff Welch (left) lead guide for Great River Fishing Adventures and Dean Werk, owner of Great River, hold a 1,000-pound Great White sturgeon caught in the Fraser River in a handout photo. Recreational fishery dominates revenue generation, employment figures in new study

By Scott Simpson, Vancouver Sun/Calgary Herald, February 13, 2013

British Columbia’s recreational fishery is worth as much to the provincial economy as commercial fishing, aquaculture and fish processing combined, according to a new report from BC Stats.

The report, the first major economic review of the sector since 2007, estimates overall B.C. fisheries and aquaculture sector revenue at $2.2 billion for 2011 including $936 million contribution from recreational angling.

That boils down to a $325 million contribution to gross domestic product from the recreational sub-sector — not including spending on angling gear, boats and other vehicles — compared to $340 million in combined GDP from the commercial, aquaculture and fish processing sub-sectors including commercial boats and gear.
