We would certainly agree, which is why we made this short film featuring a thoughtful conversation with legendary fly fishing guide Jack Dennis about his involvement, and the efforts of late Senator Craig Thomas, American Rivers, and its partners, in designating the Upper Snake River Headwaters in Wyoming as one of the nation’s most comprehensive Wild & Scenic Rivers.

Through this film, you can experience a small taste of the beauty of the Snake near Jackson, as well as feel the joy between Jack and his grandson as they ply the currents of this beautiful stretch of water. And as he says about the experience of working on more than 400 miles of Wild & Scenic protections for the river, “It was the most satisfying thing, outside of family, that I have ever done.” Thanks, Jack.

Our goal with this film is to celebrate this important success and inspire people to protect more Wild and Scenic rivers, with an eye toward the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 2018. Peel (http://thepeel.ca/) is a multi-layered project bringing together film, the arts and sciences as a means of telling a uniquely Canadian story of art, adventure and Canadian identity. The Peel highlights the landscape, culture and wildlife of the Peel River Watershed (PRW) in Yukon/Northwest territories. This watershed is one of the last undeveloped watersheds left in Canada, spanning nearly 68,000km2 of intact arctic wilderness. As of January 2014 71% was opened for economic development related to mining and oil exploration — that decision has been continuously fought.

Fly Fishing the Peel River: Dolly Varden - This colourful fish is found in two areas of the Yukon: the Tatshenshini River drainage in the southwest and the Peel River drainage in the far north. Other Yukon fish include Arctic Grayling, Bull Trout, Rainbow Trout, Inconnu, Burbot & Northern Pike.

Southern Alberta's rivers face high threats to overall health

A report on Canada’s watersheds suggests the threats to rivers in southern Alberta — including the Bow River through Calgary — are high.

The assessment, released Tuesday by the World Wildlife Fund, shows pollution, habitat fragmentation and overuse of water are the top threats to the Saskatchewan River watersheds. It includes the Red Deer River, Bow River and the Oldman River.

“The health of Canada’s fresh water is a hugely important issue to Canadians,” said David Miller, chief executive officer for WWF. “Our goal as an organization is to help all of Canada’s water be in good condition by 2025.”

To that end, they are looking at the health of Canada’s 25 major watersheds and assessing them on four indicators of water health — flow, quality, fish and bugs — and seven indicators of threats to aquatic ecosystems: pollution, climate change, habitat loss and fragmentation, overuse of water, alteration of flows, and invasive species.

They’ve created an interactive tool on 12 of the watersheds so far to help people learn more about the one they live in and find ways to ensure there’s safe and clean water for future generations.

Officials urge Calgarians to respect rivers and stay safe

Provincial and municipal officials are asking river enthusiasts to keep motorized vehicles far away from the water.

After the Calgary Herald took a photo Monday of a man driving his Jeep through the Bow River near the Graves Bridge on Glenmore Trail, government officials were outraged that anyone would think it’s OK to run a vehicle through the river intentionally.

According to Alberta Environment and Parks, the offence can be punishable through a range of fines under the Public Lands Act, anywhere from $250 to $25,000 if someone is intentionally driving through sensitive aquatic habitat, particularly if fish are spawning.

Earlier this month, a judge in Rocky Mountain House handed out fines of $1,500 each to two men who drove their ATVs through the Clearwater River, the highest fines ever handed out for that type of offence.

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard puts mega-dams in the crossfire with new documentary, DamNation

Yvon Chouinard is not one to mince words.

“Every project that man has ever done is going to have to come out some day, I don’t care what it is,” says the 75-year-old environmentalist with typical bluntness. “What happens normally is these things are put up and when they are no longer useful people walk away from them. And, at best, it’s left to the taxpayers to remediate and to clean up.”

Which is the thrust behind DamNation, the environmental documentary that will be screened at the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. The film is executive produced by Chouinard on behalf of his company Patagonia, the manufacturer of high-end outdoor apparel that the businessman founded back in 1973. It is a no-holds-barred look at the environmental havoc caused by dams in the U.S. over the past 90 years, particularly on fish populations.

Balloons To The Moon had planned to release 1,000 balloons in Sarnia, Ontario Canada. After a few of us politely informed the organizer of the ugly, deadly litter fallen balloons become, he reluctantly canceled the release & pulled down the FB page. We happily posted the "Balloon Release Averted!" right away. 

Unfortunately, his disappointed followers prompted him to revive his plans. So we then posted the mass littering alert here. 

Thankfully, our friends stepped up & emailed the local authority contacts provided & posted on the page. Finally, the organizer once again canceled... this time for good!

Much respect to all our friends who spoke out against this mindless aerial littering. Sometimes it takes just one kind message, sometimes it takes all of us.
