Lost Drift Boat

On Thursday, July 3 at 8:40pm we ran into difficulty at Policeman’s Flats whilst landing our boat.

We unfortunately lost a 16ft aluminum drift boat, oars, 2 Sage rods, green fishing jacket, green fishing waistcoat, 2 landing nets and a wading staff.

If you happen to see anything whilst drifting on the Bow, we would appreciate any information.

Please call: Kevin 403-990-0669

Another afternoon urban float about to get underway.

One of our shuttle clients forgot to leave his key for us today. Couldn't move his rig, so we had to go rescue him. He's now going to get a key cut for us. His key won't be lonely. We have over 500 vehicle

Vandalism at Johnson's Island/Carseland

On July 20, we reported a hazard that we had noticed at this boat launch. One source had described it as an accident that had resulted from a trailer axle hooking a concrete slab and flipping it up.

Shortly thereafter, a reader sent us this photo.

We think this is a more plausible explanation for what happened. And if so, this was not an 'accident'. We would call it vandalism.

TransAlta continues to manage the flow rate as only TransAlta can. At 3:30 pm this afternoon, the Bow River at Calgary flow dropped below 200 cms, and continued it's decent all the way down to around 104 cms by 6:00 pm.

Big bugs are still on the water through Alberta. The Crowsnest green drakes continue (think dark conditions); golden stones on the Bow (late eve to dawn); golden stones on cutthroat waters (think sunny, summer skies); a few hexagenia mayflies; the ever-lasting brown drakes near the dam on the Red Deer; and hoppers are starting to grow up. It remains a good time to cast larger bugs.:-)

The Skeena estuary contains an abundance of life. It is among the most productive ecosystems in the world and home to a variety of unique plant and animal communities including wild salmon and steelhead.

Today the Skeena estuary faces an uncertain future with the many industrial development projects taking place in the area. Designated as critical salmon habitat, this natural wonder requires special management, consideration and protection. We're working to understand the impacts and make sure it is protected.

Hazard at Carseland/Johnson's Island boat launch

We noticed this a couple days ago. A post by 'Fishingliven' on the Fly Fish Calgary forum said that "a vehicle caught its axle on the last concrete slab of the launch that was under water and flipped it up and exposed a huge piece of it". As you can see, only about half the boat ramp is usable, and it could be a challenge, taking out, as there is a noticeable current, from right to left, that would be pushing a boat towards the cement slab.

Spending the day on the river with the 'legend' of "Blue Ribbon Bow" fame.

We spoke with two of my shuttle clients at different times at Mac this afternoon. Both parties, while not together, were on the river quite early. They reported excellent stone fly fishing until mid-morning. Activity dropped off for awhile, and then picked up again. They were very happy with their day on the Bow.

The flow of the Bow River at Banff dropped below 100 cms for the first time since the runoff. That's undammed, natural flow.

The Bow River at Calgary seems to be having a bit of trouble making a decision over the past 48 hours. After being down around 130 cms last night, it's currently back up around 165 cms.

With everyone getting ready for the weekend it's time for an end of the week update.... The Bow continues to offer as good of fishing as we have maybe ever seen. Lots of dry fly stuff, nymphing is silly, and streamer fishing is downright easy.

The Crow and High Country Streams are also offering up some excellent fishing with decent numbers of bugs. Enjoy, this is what some of us might remember as normal.

Two thumbs up for pinky and perky! Ready for an afternoon float.

After bumping back up to over 200 cms for about three days, the Bow is now back down to 183 cms.

Although the flow rate is on the high side of the long term average, the river is in excellent condition and fishing very well.

One of our shuttle clients, Brian J., floated Police to Mac today. He said that this was one of those spectacular days that he waits for, that shows up only once every four or five years. Despite the bright sunny day, his party landed several dozen fish, almost all on dry flies.

Another shuttle client, Ryan L., was able to float his favorite reach today, Mac to Carsland, now that that boat launch has re-opened at the bottom end of the 'Blue Ribbon Bow'. His very good day was mostly on streamers, and he's going back early tomorrow morning to do it all over again. Same float!

Rowing out at Policeman's Flats at 200 cms

This is how an experienced rower exits the river at Policeman's Flats in high flow conditions. Today, July 10, 2014. Flow rate 200 cms.

Last week, an aluminum drift boat capsized here after hitting a rock while trying to cross the eddy line.  The occupants were shaken and wet, but unharmed. However, the boat, rods, nets and equipment drifted downstream and have not been seen since.

It was great to hear some of our clients say "I want a shuttle today from Mac to Cars"!

The very first vehicles and trailers in more than a year were shuttled into the Carseland/Johnsons Island boat launch today by us, Bow River Shuttles! We shuttled a total of four rigs to that boat launch, including some visitors from Idaho.

Two of our drivers, Bob M. and Dick N, agreed to pose for this historic photo.
