The Bow River Chapter of Trout Unlimited Canada (TUC) is pleased to announce their Fly Tying Symposium featuring renowned fly fishers Dave Whitlock, Kelly Galloup and Jim McLennan.

The symposium will be held on April 9th and 10th at the Delta Calgary South hotel, 135 Southland Drive SE, from 9am to 5pm each day.

$75 two day or $45 individual day passes are available.

Casting for Life , a non-profit society formed in 1997, has introduced women from all over Alberta and some from other provinces in Canada to the sport of fly fishing.

Fly fishing is an excellent activity for women who have had breast cancer as the motion of casting the fly exercises the arm, thereby providing means of gradual muscle strengthening and lymph fluid movement.


CfL takes interested women on a three day weekend retreat in which they are taught the art of fly fishing, fly tying and also exposed to other activities beneficial in being on the road to regaining enjoyment of life again.

A volunteer "fishing buddy" is introduced to each participant for an afternoon of fishing on the Saturday.

The retreat fees are subsidized by fund raising activity that CfL does throughout the year so the cost to the participant is minimal.

Q the X - Winner Best Film at Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival

"The concept wasn't pre-conceived for Q the X. We'd set out to gather intimate video footage for a forthcoming sight fishing dvd. As we fished this tiny stream, which we named "the X", we began to get in touch with a different perspective. It's a perspective we've garnered after fishing waters with low or obvious fish stocks, through western Canada and US, and especially New Zealand. It's a perspective that we see, that we can't shake if we're honest about the impacts we have on such fisheries. This is not to project this on to anyone, it's just sharing.

The thoughts and perspectives of fishing this tiny stream culminated in a question of our fishing, hence the name "Q the X". It's a question every angler can ask themselves on any piece of water, centering on the fundamental environmental principle that if we use it, we affect it.

This short won the best feature at the Back Cast film festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 2011." - Dave & Amelia Jensen

Annual film festival for fly fishers

SCREENING The fourth annual Back Cast Fly Fishing Film Festival returns to Calgary on Saturday.

Two screenings — a matinee at 1 p.m. and an evening show at 6:30 p.m. — will be held at Cardel Theatre. Each show will have its own lineup of films, but both will feature top films from the genre this year.
If you can only make one of the shows, the evening show includes two awardwinning movies: Rivers of a Lost Coast and Eastern Rises.

Tickets are $15 per adult for the matinee or $25 for both shows before 10 p.m. tonight, or $20 at the door per show.

Fish & Fishing Art Competition

Fish and Fishing have been key to life on the Oregon Coast. Artists in this competition, sponsored by the Coos Art Museum, were challenged to submit works on these themes. From 182 submissions our jurors selected 70 works for display. Works in many media are on view and demonstrate the broadest range of interpretations of the theme.

Fish photos & Speed tying

A couple of recent weekend fly shop seminars proved to be very popular and really brought out the fly fishers.


Dan Jackson (for Fish Tales Fly Shop) did a very good seminar on fly fishing photography. One of my daughters, who is a professional photographer herself, tagged along. She was very impressed, not only with Dan’s knowledge, but also with the way he was able to explain things in layman’s language.


The tripod that Dan is holding in one of the photos was intended to be a fish. He was showing how to handle a fish properly to get that “hero” shot. He also emphasized the importance of having the fish out of water for only a matter of seconds – just enough time to get the shot.

Jeff Thomson (for Country Pleasures Fly Shop) showed trick after trick of “assembly line” fly tying (A.K.A. commercial tying).


After reviewing quite a number of strategies, he showed that he could not only talk the talk, but walk the walk, by tying up a dozen each of two different flies in a matter of minutes.


The quality of those flies made it obvious why his creations are in high demand at the local fly shops.
