The Bow River, famous for its trout fishing, has been inundated with a number of unwanted fish and anglers believe the invasive species have been intentionally introduced to the waterway.

“There are a variety of different fish that are purchased through the pet trade that are released into the rivers and Prussian carp is one of the most common ones being found in (southern Alberta’s) rivers now,” explains Brian Meagher, Trout Unlimited Canada’s Alberta Biologist.

Group rescues thousands of fish from irrigation canals

NEAR GRANUM, AB — The water in the irrigation canal, between Granum and Fort Macleod in southern Alberta, is only knee deep but there’s fish hiding in the riffles and pools beneath the surface.

“Any fish that are in here after today are dead,” says Brian Meagher, a provincial biologist with Trout Unlimited Canada in Calgary. “The fish will not be able to overwinter here.”

Join Trout Unlimited Canada tomorrow morning, Thursday June 27, for fish rescue event.

"Please note that we are going ahead with a fish recue event on Thursday June 27th. The goal of the effort is to rescue fish stranded after the Alberta floods. We are asking that volunteers meet at the TUC office in Calgary at 8:00am. Suite 160- 6712 Fisher ST SE.

Please bring lunch, water, waders, gloves, sunscreen and what ever else you will need for the day. We will meet up with Fish and Wildlife shortly after and break into a couple teams depending on volunteer support and gear. We will likely also be going again on Friday- but a longer term plan is being developed."

TUC Responds Regarding Leaked DFO Document

In response to concerns of Trout Unlimited Canada members and supporters across Canada regarding potential changes to the fish habitat provisions of the federal Fisheries Act, CEO Jeff Surtees wrote to The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

A press release by a former Department of Fisheries and Oceans biologist, Otto Langer has been widely reported in the media. That press release stated that Mr. Langer had been provided with a leaked government document which says that Cabinet is planning to water down the habitat protection provisions of the Canada Fisheries Act by deleting the habitat protection provisions of section 35 of the Act and replacing it with a new section which does not mention or protect habitat.
