June 05 River Report courtesy Alberta Fishing Guide Magazine

This morning, many people south to north woke to snow on their decks and BBQs. It's cold. The mountains are white and the snow line is shockingly low.
The irony isn't lost that we're 2 weeks from the longest day of the year.

This latest, fast moving cold front didn't drop an enormous amount of precip but did cool everything off, just as things were - sort of - warming up.

Fly Fishing Team Canada

After Session 2, Andy Larkin (he with the beard :-)) from Team Canada Red is the leading Canadian in #9 spot out of 75 competitors.

Andy Larkin writes: "Just on the bus back from the bank session. This morning I fished kennick and it was completely different than when we practiced and it kicked a lot of people's butts. I managed 3 with the most caught being 5 so I think it landed me somewhere around 4th-ish. This afternoon I won my bank session on sibliback with 8 fish and a whopper of a 58cm rainbow that broke the tie."

In Team standings, Canada White and Canada Red are in #10 and #12 spots, out of a total of 15 teams.

Dam demolished on Forty Mile creek (Banff National Park)

by Cathy Ellis, Rocky Mountain Outlook, June 5, 2014

From the article:

"Wendy Francis, program director for the Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y) Conservation Initiative, said partial removal of the dam is a good news story and the risks are low compared to the long-term potential ecological benefits.

She said Y2Y completed a detailed report on ecological integrity of the Upper Bow River watershed in 2008, and one of the study’s recommendations was removal of the dam on Forty Mile Creek, restoration of habitat and aquatic connectivity to the Bow River.

“There’s all kinds of impacts associated with having that dam on that creek for all of these decades, not the least of which is preventing free movement of native fish species up and down the creek,” she said.

“Restoring the ability of native fish to move up and down is a really good thing.”

Drift Boat Etiquette: Rules of the Road

Drift Boat Etiquette: Rules of the Road

by Captain Joe Demalderis, Hatch Magazine, May 21, 2014

In its simplest form, etiquette is nothing more than doing the right thing at the right time given a particular situation. Some of these rules have been written down, but most have not. So without a formal written code how do we know the correct conduct for a particular situation? Generally, determining the right thing to do -- following the rules of etiquette -- can usually be accomplished by leveraging common sense and always taking into consideration how you'd like to be treated if your role in the situation at hand was reversed.
