On this year's Top 10 list is Calgary-based 'Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology' (CAWST)
Global access to clean water, sanitation and health
Issue area: Water, International development
Where they work: Calgary, Internationally
Based in Calgary, supporting hundreds of organizations in 69 countries, CAWST aims to catalyze community action in developing countries to initiate and operate water and sanitation programs for those who live without.
We chose them for:
- improving global access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene and health as a means to community development.
- taking an approach that starts with education, not infrastructure, and providing the knowledge and skills local organizations need to serve their communities.
- designing a simple biosand filter based on slow sand water filtering and materials that can be found, built and fixed locally.
