 Expert urging better program to predict floods

Provincial forecast system 'utterly failed'

As the insurance industry calls for updated flood maps, a well-known water expert says it's time to learn from the lessons provided by the June floods - including the need for a national flood prediction program.

Robert Sandford, the Canadian chairman of the United Nations Water for Life Decade initiative, said it's clear the right systems weren't in place to forecast the natural disaster.

"The first problem was that the province's flood prediction system utterly failed," he told a business and academic crowd that gathered Monday for a luncheon speech organized by the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business.
