Some folks were wondering about the boat launch at 22X/Fish Creek Park.

We went to have a look, and decided to also visit the other city launches as well as Policeman's Flats.

Landing trophy trout doesn’t have to be a once in a lifetime chance, says Landon Mayer. With the right skill and training, it can become a lifetime of chances!

In Landing the Trout of Your Life, Landon teams with legendary fly creator, John Barr, to bring this truth to life. Using tried and true principles and techniques, Landon and John demonstrate how any angler can spot, hook, and land trophy trout in any river.

The Contemporary Sportsman – Spring 2011

With 280 pages to peruse in the Spring issue of The Contemporary Sportsman, where do you start?

How about “Lords of the North”, a feature article on the Ekaluk River in Nunavut?

Then you can head over to bonefishing heaven in “St Brandon’s, Mauritius”; great story and photography by Henry Gilbey.

I’ll leave the rest of the journey up to you!

Hauling oilsands equipment thru Montana opposed

A controversy has been brewing south of the border on a subject related to the Alberta oilsands – the hauling of oilsands equipment thru Idaho and Montana.

The topic has surfaced on a number of fly fishing blogs, including Moldy Chum.

There have been many mentions in the media, including this one in The New York Times and another on NPR.

Yesterday, it was mentioned in the Calgary Herald. Montana gov’t faces lawsuit over Canadian-bound oil equipment

Several websites have been set up in opposition, including “All Against the Haul”.

This is Fly - April 2011

An interesting special feature titled “Define What is Cool” takes a look at what a variety of fly fishers think is the most exciting thing happening in the sport right now.

There are feature articles on Cuba, the Buckley River (B.C.) and Mozambique, plus a photo essay by featured photographer Corey Kruitbosch.

Canadian Youth National Fly Team fundraiser

We received this message from Canadian Youth National Fly Fishing Team, 2011 Team Member Kyle Snarr:

“Last week we made the draw for a custom walnut tying bench full of materials, tools, and a vice. This was a fundraiser for the Canadian Youth Fly Fishing Team’s upcoming trip to a worlds competition in Italy this upcoming summer. Tickets sold fast, and people were eager to hear they were the winner.

The winner of the custom tying bench is Greg Kosinski! Congratulations Greg on the win, and your support! A big thanks goes to all those who have supported our teams fundraising efforts! Thank you Superfly, Dr. Slick, Montana Fly, The Canadian Llama Company, and Rainy’s for making this such a success.

Because the first tying bench sold out so quickly I have decided to build another tying bench to be raffled off. It is well on its way to being finished and please continue to check posts on the Bow River Troutfitters Blog, and the Fly Fish Calgary Board!

Boat Launch Report – It’s S'no'w Joke

April 01 was a rather gloomy day, with an even gloomier short term weather forecast.

Environment Canada: “Winter Storm warning in effect”. David Spence (CTV Weather) says “The storm will drop 10-20 cm of snow on Calgary (on Saturday), with the higher amounts on the west side of the city. Farther west, in the foothills, up to 25 cm of snow can be expected in most areas.”

However, it’s going back up to +10C on Monday (with possible flooding).

We received a few phone calls this week enquiring about boat launch conditions. So we decided to do another tour.
