Back in November, The Fishin' Hole sponsored a special screening of the Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T).  Proceeds from this event, some $2,000, were donated to Casting for Life in support of their programs for breast cancer survivors.

Friends of The Fishin' Hole and Casting for Life who helped out in various ways included  Calgary Women Fly Fishing Club, Calgary Hook & Hackle Club and Bow River Shuttles.

Fly Life Mag ‘South of the Border Issue’ – Dec 2011

Go directly to the interview with John Fowler. John specializes in sculpture of fresh and saltwater gamefish cast in stainless steel and bronze. You’ll be amazed at the images of his work.

This issue is titled “South of the Border”, as in south of the U.S.A./Mexican border. With that in mind, make your second stop “The Yucatan Slam”, subtitled ‘So many places to fish and so little time’. Somewhere in there, I'm sure that you’ll find a destination to add to your bucket list. :-)

All told, more than 100 pages of salt water fun and photos!

From Chris Patterson and Jim Klug - the filmmakers who created the highly acclaimed movies DRIFT and RISE - comes CONNECT, the most ambitious, large-scale fly fishing film ever made.

Continuing in the tradition of the multi-segment, multi-story format that Confluence Films has become known for, CONNECT introduces a number of new locations, exotic species, and compelling characters that epitomize and exemplify the sport of fly fishing.

Shot on location in Japan, Yellowstone National Park, the Yukon Drainage of Alaska, the flats of Cuba, the coast of Maine, and in the wilds of Tanzania, Africa, this feature-length movie will once again transport viewers around the world in search of new waters and exhilarating travel experiences.

CONNECT features well-known anglers Greg Vincent, Jeff Currier, Jimmy Bartschi, Craig Mathews, Masa Katsumata, Brian Porter, and Captain Eric Wallace, and more than a dozen different fish species, both freshwater and saltwater.

As with DRIFT and RISE before, the cinematography, sound, and feel of CONNECT come together in a visual masterpiece that promises to re-set the bar for fly fishing films.

Fracking concerns scuttle Encana asset sale

Fracking concerns scuttle Encana asset sale

Bid recalled due to water issues

By Dina O'Meara,

CALGARY — Concerns over the effect of hydraulic fracturing on the drinking water of a Native American reservation have prompted a Texas company to drop its bid for an Encana Corp. asset, the companies said.

Legacy Reserves withdrew its $45 million US offer for the field near Pavillion, Wyo., after the Environmental Protection Agency said water in the region contained high levels of cancer-causing pollutants and at least one chemical used in hydraulic fracturing.

Fracking safety concerns a festering issue

Fracking safety concerns a festering issue

By Stephen Ewart,
Calgary Herald
December 3, 2011

The fracking debate moved to the floor of the provincial legislature this week, where the government promised to get in front of the issue while con-tending it's nothing new.

In contrast to the heated policy debates among politicians elsewhere in the world, discussions in the Alberta legislature have been limited to a handful of questions - generally more speculative than penetrating - appearing in Hansard over the past three years.

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the technological revolution that, when applied with advanced horizontal drilling techniques, has literally re-drawn the global map for oil and, especially, natural gas.

Nobody was predicting Pennsylvania or Poland were going to become major producing regions before the ubiquitous application of shooting jets of water laced with small amounts of chemicals and sand into rock deep under-ground.

It's opened oil and gas deposits once considered uneconomic so much that it caused gas prices to plummet to largely uneconomic levels. Some estimates say 90 per cent of North American wells now use fracking to increase production.

The great fear - among myriad fears - is groundwater contamination.

This is Fly - #32 Dec 2011

I’d start with ‘Holga Master’, a very cool photo essay by Brian Schiele.

Then I’d go to Mongolia, chasing huge Taimen in ‘Last Moment of Silence’.

After that, you’re on your own… all the while listening to this issue’s ‘Mixtape’.

Should Enbridge's proposed Alberta-B.C. oil pipeline go ahead?

December 1, 2011

First Nations leaders from British Columbia are scheduled to make an announcement Thursday about a proposed pipeline that would take Alberta oil to the northern coast of B.C.

Enbridge has proposed building the $5.5-billion Northern Gateway pipeline from Bruderheim, Alta., near Edmonton, to Kitimat, B.C., a coastal city with a deep-water port that could accommodate oil tankers transporting oilsands bitumen to Asian markets.

"Northern Gateway will link two of Canada's most important competitive strengths: our tremendous petroleum reserves and our Pacific advantage -- safe deepwater ports that are close to the growing markets of the Pacific Rim," said Janet Holder, Enbridge's executive vice-president of Western access, in August.

Environmentalists say the proposed route would take the pipeline through northern B.C. rivers and sensitive habitat.
